Classic rock rarity alert! Folk trio Milkwood was The Cars before they became The Cars. The songs on the band’s lone 1972 album, “How’s The Weather,” were written and sung by Richard Otcasek (AKA Ric Ocasek) and Benjamin Orzechowski (AKA Ben Orr), and there’s even some guest musician work by Greg Hawkes—on saxophones, not keyboards. The cover is beat up (and written on; thanks for that, Cheryl, wherever you are) and was subjected to one of the worst shipping packaging jobs I’ve ever seen (saran-wrapped, then taped to some flimsy cardboard folded over a few times), but it made it here in one piece.

Generally I ignore the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame because it always reflects someone else’s record collection, not mine. To me, it’s just yet another excuse for Baby Boomers to impose their tastes on everyone else as usual, essentially saying that their bands were the only ones that mattered and everything after 1978 sucked unless they read about it in Rolling Stone. I’ve always said none of my favorite bands will ever get in, but this year I was gladly proven wrong as The Cars finally got their due. You can say that the Hall finally ran out of burnout favorites like the Allmans and various Zeppelin clones to let in (oh were that to be mercifully true), but the guys from Boston deserve the nod. When they were bad, they were bad, but when they were good, they were fantastic. Always greater than the sum of its parts, the Cars created some of pop/rock’s greatest moments, and if it means we get to hear Eliot Easton do what he was born to do—f’in WAIL through those immaculately musical guitar solos—one last time when they play the awards ceremony, then the wait will have been worthwhile.

The classic album in a likewise classic audiophile release. It’s one of those records where you put it on and discover you know EVERY SONG—just one perfect pop jewel after another, adorned with Ocasek and Orr’s quirky vocals, Hawkes’ innovative synths and guitar god Elliot Easton’s melodic-yet-ripping solos wrapping it all together.
