Are electric bikes making us smarter?

We are in an age of change. 

What with Tesla changing the automotive industry, SpaceX changing aerospace (I realize the last two companies are owned by Elon Musk), wind and gas companies weaning us off of fossil fuels, Uber changing how we move around. 

The list goes on. 

Many of the new companies today look at their respective incumbent industries and propose a cheaper, faster and more convenient way of doing things. 

Apple pitted itself against Big Blue (IBM) as the more nimble, more affordable, better designed personal computer. 

These David and Goliath type stories are important for how we advance our society. 

Which brings us to electric bikes. I’ve come across a few new electric bike companies (ex. Happarel and Zeitgeist) and I don’t really get what the buzz is about.  

A bicycle at its core already green. They don’t emit fossil fuels, they’re becoming more affordable. They’re fitting peoples lifestyles with better design and they’re great for your health. And like mobile phones, bicycles continue to be one of the greatest innovations of our time. They radically changed how we moved.  

So what’s the story with electric bike companies? Are normal bicycles big and bad? Are they making it harder or more expensive to get around town? 

Right now I am not convinced, but can be easily swayed. What do you think?

Spring Fever Means Bent Basket

Spring is here at last. 

You know what that means? 

Dusting off that bike, oiling those chains and riding around town. 

It has been a busy few months (despite the radio silence) on our end and we plan on sharing some new features to the Bent Basket and collaborations. 

We’ll keep this update short. 

We have some new wholesalers that are now selling Bent Baskets in local markets around the world. Milan, Bangkok, Singapore, St. Helena, Oakland. We are globe trotting! If you’re in one of those locales stop by and ask for a Bent Basket.

We’re in an exhibition at the Design Museum in Gent, Belgium called Bike To The Future. The exhibition starts this Friday, 3/25/2016 you should stop by and take some photos near our basket and send them to Instagram with the hashtag #bentbasket. Check out this fun video they created.

A few months ago Faris and I were moved by Eric’s story of cycling across America to lose weight and win his wife’s love back. 

Some of you might know this, but I am a trained health economist who’s spent the better part of a decade trying to improve the health of many lives. 

Physical activity (in whatever form that’s comfortable for you) is an essential ingredient for a happy and healthy life. 

But it’s hard to do. Especially in the States. 

What with the crazy number of work hours, commutes are getting longer, access to healthy and nutritious food is only starting to be addressed, and people’s incomes are shrinking. 

I know this blog isn’t about politics but I can’t help but read Eric’s story with a political lens.

Whatever caused Eric to gain all of that weight, he’s now decided to take charge of his life. He wants to bike across America and prove to everyone that he can do it. 

Not to downplay all the systematic factors that are contributing to the problems, we think what Eric is doing is pretty cool. Which is why we’re excited to sponsor Eric on his ride.
