Benthanweek day 7: First kiss!

Lights and Shadows

The first time they had kissed, properly, Benji had initiated it. It was a cloudless night in the streets of New York City. The lights of the city and the warmth of the summer air gave him a sense of belonging. 

Here he was among a crowd of thousands, in the city that never sleeps something many spies had in common.  It’s also why they had been walking the crowded streets. Although their work obligations had been met, they each had found themselves unable to find rest in their safe house. It had been just the two of them this time, as the rest of their normal crew had been on their own individual assignment. Benji could only pray that they came back home whole. 

No one truly does, he mused. No matter how hard they try, there were pieces of themselves they could never get back. Benji had been in the game for a while. However not as long as Luther or Ethan, the two more experience members of their little family.  Benji smiled at thought: Family 

He glanced towards Ethan, as his face was illuminated by the passing cars and streetlights. He seemed calmer as they continued to walk on.  Although their ultimate destination was uncertain, Benji noticed that this was a rare case in which uncertainty did not come with an overwhelming sense of dread.  

“This is nice.” Benji muttered

“Hmm, yes I suppose it is.’ Ethan spoke back, his voice barely audible by the city soundscape. ‘Thank you for walking with me. I don’t think I could be alone right now.”  

They made it to Herald Square, as the street vendors had begun to pack up their tables and fake luxury goods. As they waited for the crosswalk sign to let them pass, Benji glanced down to Ethan’s hands. He was fidgeting his thumbs again. It was something Benji noticed a short while after being in the field with the man. It seemed to be a nervous habit. 

Without second thought Benji grabbed Ethan’s hand in his. He didn’t know why he reached for it, under normal circumstances Benji wouldn’t dare initiate any physical contact unless Ethan did first. Ethan, however, didn’t seem to mind. In fact, Ethan squeezed back his hand, a sign that the hand holding was welcomed. 

They’d walk up street, hand in hand, looking like just another couple out enjoying a late-night walk in the big city. What Benji would have given for it to be true. But the two of them, they weren’t allowed nights like these: Quiet moments out and about, among the world of the living and out of the shadows. 

That’s what they were, and what they would always be: shadows. Do shadows have souls? Benji pondered the question for a moment. It was a silly thought. If souls were real, he thought, they’d dwell in living men. Not in darkness that they all carried around. But if shadows were sentient, would they want to be free, unbound to their human counterparts? It didn’t matter either way. 

He was sentient. So really, the question was: What would he do if he were free? 

And in a split second Benji makes his decision. Life was far too short to let it be dictated by what his line of work allowed. For Once, he’d make a decision for himself.

“Ethan.” He said his voice soft, and gentle. 

“What?” Ethan turns to look at him. Benji planted a kiss on his cheek. It was short and sweet, playful even. Ethan’s eyes stared on; his brows furrowed. No anger or annoyance seemed evident in his expression, mostly confusion. 

“I care for you, a lot. Too much.” Benji said, trying to keep up with his sudden burst of courage. “And I can’t keep pretending I don’t.” “What are you saying?” “Ethan, you know what I’m saying.” “Then kiss me again. Properly this time.” 

And in the warm summer night, where their only company was  the streetlights and evening pedestrians, they found affection and joy within each other’s company.
