"In Beppu, pools of boiling water, steam, and hot mud rising naturally from deep within the earth are called jigoku—“hells.” There is Umi Jigoku, or Sea Hell, with its vividly blue water, and Chinoike Jigoku, or Blood Pond Hell, with its red, bubbling mud.
