I suspect coin hoards (and other types of hoard) have many different origins, and that hiding them in times of trouble is the least of them. This is a really interesting conclusion. I've written here before about Richard Bradley's book, A Geography of Offerings. Seriously, read this book, if you're at all interested in deposits of 'offerings'. Fascinating.
