ON GRIEF AND THE WIND . There will be times when you are very, very sad. Not just disappointed, but actually in grief. Grief is heavy, and the root of the word (“gwere-”) is related to words for pressure, force, weight, and even “venerable.” Grief shows up in the body as a heaviness, pulling our shoulders down, caving inwards over our hearts, collapsing under its weight. Needing a soft place to land, we stay in bed. “Gwere-” is also the root of the words “guru” and “gravity.” As guru, grief is our teacher. It is a kind of visceral inability to “lighten up.” . It is also related to the word “barometer” as in barometric pressure. So grief can be kind of atmospheric in this way, like a dark cloud that hangs over us. Sometimes, I just go outside, when I am deeply sad (which is a triumph in and of itself) and I go somewhere where I can just sit and feel the wind. Feeling the air move is a way to relieve the pressure of grief, if only for the moments that I notice it. In an animistic sense, the wind is part of our climate which is made up of all kinds of more-than-human beings all working in concert to pump information around the planet. Trees communicate this way: they can signal to each other when fires are coming, or what kinds of bugs may be having their way. So there’s an intelligence in the climate, and the wind is part of that — it can also be known as an “ancestor.” . This is an excerpt from Magical • Radical: A Child’s Guide to The Apocalypse. BERNDNAUT SMILDE
