Bernd Leno was furious with Neal Maupay after he was stretchered off with an injury (AP)Rio Ferdinand has defended Neal Maupay after the Brighton striker’s challenge led to a nasty injury for Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno. The German goalkeeper was forced to leave the field on a stretcher in the first half of Arsenal’s clash with Brighton on Saturday after he landed awkwardly on his right knee. Moments before he hit the ground, Maupay bumped into Leno, which put the Arsenal goalkeeper off balance as he caught the ball in mid-air. As he was carried off the field on the stretcher, a visibly angry Leno confronted Maupay and appeared to be unhappy with the Brighton striker’s challenge for the ball. But despite Leno’s fury, Ferdinand has defended Maupay over his challenge. ‘You can’t blame Maupay for that, he would have felt worse in training or even in the warm-up,’ Ferdinand told BT Sport. Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno has hailed Liverpool rival Alisson (Picture: Getty)Arsenal star Bernd Leno has hailed Liverpool’s Alisson as the ‘most complete goalkeeper’ in the Premier League ahead of David de Gea and Ederson. Brazil international Alisson has thrived at Anfield since signing from Roma in the summer of 2018, helping Liverpool win the Champions League and dominate the 2019-20 Premier League. Alisson and star defender Virgil van Dijk have been hailed for transforming Jurgen Klopp’s side into the best team in Europe and Arsenal’s Leno has also paid tribute to the Brazilian goalkeeper. Asked to name the best shot-stopper in the Premier League, Leno told Soccer Am: ‘For me it’s clear, it’s Alisson. ‘He’s good at everything and his stats are also very good. He’s played a number of big games for Liverpool and for me it’s clear that he’s the best goalkeeper at the moment.’ Like Alisson, Leno also arrived in the Premier League two years ago and has largely impressed for Arsenal despite the club’s mixed form. Last month, Liverpool goalkeeper coach John Achterberg revealed the secret behind Alisson’s immediate success in England. Alisson has thrived at Anfield since joining the Reds in 2018 (Picture: EPA)He said: ‘Alisson is a goalie who has no fear – if he does something, he sticks to his decision. ‘In his mind, he knows what to do and he doesn’t hesitate. That is natural goalkeeping, having no fear, reading the game and deciding. ‘One of his big strengths is to stay calm in the high-pressure moments and making what look like natural, easy decisions, but they’re not easy because you always need perfect solutions and decisions. It’s a quality he has.’ MORE: FOOTBALL Arsenal star Bernd Leno snubs David de Gea as he names best Premier League goalkeeperBad Boys producers working on draft for fourth film and we're readyMiriam Margolyes' most shocking TV moments as she admits she 'wanted Boris Johnson to die'Follow Metro Sport across our social channels, on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Arteta took his first training session at Arsenal on Sunday (Picture: Getty)Mikel Arteta demanded unity from his Arsenal squad ahead of his first training session as head coach. The Spaniard took charge of training on Sunday after watching from the stands as Arsenal drew 0-0 with Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday. Arteta was waiting for the players in the dressing room at full-time and goalkeeper Bernd Leno revealed what was said. ‘He didn’t speak too much about quality or about tactics, he just said he wants to see players who run, who support their team-mates, who defend the goal, play as a team,’ Leno explained. Arteta’s first game in charge is against Bournemouth (Picture: Getty)‘I think this was our main problem [before]. We played this season some good games, like this, but many games we were not good enough on this point. ‘I think this is the way he needs to push us. We understood the message. We didn’t let [Everton] have any transitions and the distances [between our defenders and their attackers] were much closer. ‘This is the only way to play, because the Premier League is too strong to have one, two or three players that don’t defend.’ MORE: SHOWBIZ Caroline Flack ‘waiting to give her side of the story’ as she addresses court hearingEmily Ratajkowski speaks out against Saudi Arabia influencer campaignBoat carrying 600 gallons of diesel sinks in Galapagos IslandsMesut Ozil and Alexandre Lacazette took part in training on Sunday after being among the group of players who missed the draw against the Toffees. The veteran keeper leaves Arsenal at the end of the season and will return to Chelsea (Picture: Getty)Arsenal fans have reacted furiously to reports that Petr Cech has already agreed to return to Chelsea this summer just a week before the Europa League final. The veteran Czech shot-stopper has started every knockout game in Europe this season ahead of No.1 keeper Bernd Leno and had been expected to keep his place in the side for the final in Baku. That will represent his final game for the Gunners before he retires, and Sky Sports are now reporting that he will be take up a new role as sporting director at old club Chelsea. Arsenal fans have not taken the news well, however, with many taking to social media to urge manager Unai Emery to reconsider starting Cech in the final if he does indeed already has an agreement with Chelsea… I don’t care how professional Petr Cech is. He is joining Chelsea straight after the most important Arsenal game for over a decade. Starting him against them should not be considered. Unai Emery must forget sentiment and start Leno, our number one keeper. #EuropaLeagueFinal #afc — Adam Keys (@_AdamKeys) May 21, 2019 If I see Petr Cech start vs Chelsea in the Europa League final after he's just been given the Sporting Director role at Chelsea for next season – I swear I'll scream — Sapologie (@ItsBrianMYG) May 21, 2019 100% start Leno now, absolutely no debate what so ever!!! https://t.co/xWjqKEl2Z2 — MR DT © (@MrDtAFC) May 21, 2019 Admire Cech but announcing you are (re) joining a rival you are playing against in a European final in a week means I would drop him and play Leno. — Ross Baxter (@RossWBaxter) May 21, 2019 START LENO START LENO START LENO START LENO START LENO START LENO START LENO START LENO START LENO START LENO START LENO START LENO START LENO START LENO START LENO START LENO START LENO START LENO START LENO START LENO START LENO START LENO START LENO START LENO @UnaiEmery_ — ⚽The⚽Arsenal🔴⚪ (@ArsenalNewsGoon) May 21, 2019 This guy cannot start in the final, it would almost be forfeiting this final. Cech has been tasked with keeping goal in the Europa League, Carabao Cup and FA Cup instead, keeping six clean sheets in 10 European appearances, and has performed his role diligently despite his looming retirement. #BerndLeno #PetrCech #ArsenalFC
4-3-1-2 | Ozil, Aubameyang, Lacazette to Start ? Strongest Arsenal Lineup That Emery Will Pick vs Burnley
Burnley visit the Emirates tonight as Arsenal prepare for their first Premier League outing since their unbeaten came to an end at St Mary's Stadium last weekend. The Gunners have recently been plagued with injury crisis which includes some key players. Unai Emery now faces a tough challenge of formulation a perfect starting XI to get his side back to winning ways. Here's how we think Emery will take his pick for the match against Burnley: Goalkeeper: Bernd Leno Right-back: Stephan Lichtsteiner Since Hector Bellerin is confirmed to miss at least the next two weeks due to a minor knock, the Swiss international is expected to step up in his place. Bellerin has been one of the stand-out performers this season and it goes without saying that he'll be missed. Centre-backs: Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Nacho Monreal Sokratis was finally back in action against Tottenham after sustaining a minor injury a couple of weeks ago. The Greek international is expected to start alongside Nacho Monreal who will have the task of playing out of position at centre-back. The gaffer has probably realised playing Granit Xhaka at centre-back not only compromises the team's defensive prowess, but also its creative outlet in midfield. Left-back: Sead Kolasinac The Bosnian suffered an injury not long ago and will have to be assessed ahead of the game vs Burnley. Kolasinac is back in full training, but he could be left out as a precaution. Centre-midfielders: Granit Xhaka, Lucas Torreira and Aaron Ramsey Xhaka had severely been missed at midfield, leaving the team without a creative outlet. His return would surely assure an improvement in that area. Lucas Torreira brings out the best in everyone around him and playing him alongside Aaron Ramsey could be a dominant midfield-three against Burnley. Attacking midfielder: Mesut Özil After mass speculations regarding a bust-up between the boss and Mesut Özil, the former PSG manager finally put to rumours to rest after confirming the German's place in today's starting XI vs Burnley. Strikers: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette These two are undoubtedly the club's best attackers and having them start together would offer a great boost to the side's attacking prowess. Formation: 4-3-1-2 Read the full article
