This Clip from "The Nightly Show" Exposes The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy Plaguing Politics

On Monday Night, Larry Wilmore hosted comedian and actor, Seaton Smith, comedy writer, Bonnie McFarlane, and American pollster, Frank Luntz to talk about the current pool of presidential hopefuls. You can watch the clip here.

On Bernie Sanders, Wilmore says "I feel like somebody like Bernie Sanders is somebody who tells the truth. I feel like people who tell the truth can never get elected president." 

 The audience applauds.

Luntz wondered if they were clapping in agreement with the host, or maybe in acknowledgment of the truth. Wilmore then asks the audience if they think Sanders can win the election. There is a beat, and then a decisive “no.”

Wilmore, clearly upset by this turns to Luntz who asks the audience “How many would vote for Bernie Sanders here?”

And the crowd goes wild. 

So why was there silence and such a clear “no” when the audience was asked if he could win? Did they switch audiences mid-shot? Did they not understand the questions? No, it’s simply the presence of the self-fulfilling prophecy at work on the American Political system. 

A self-fulfilling prophecy is exactly what it sounds like: something happens because you say it's going to happen. When we choose to see the thought of an honest politician as so remote as to vote without the prospect of winning, we truly expose the bankruptcy of our current political moment. It is circular logic that is hurting our country: we have an honest politician who we want to vote for, but because we believe that the system in which he competes is too corrupt, we convince ourselves he cannot be elected. We cannot let the fear of a political upset stop us from promoting the candidate for change. 

When we stand together as a nation and expose the truth of corruption, we can fix the oxymoron and finally elect an honest politician.
