Interview with Besok Bubar

With a name like Besok Bubar, which translates as “Tomorrow We’ll Break Up,” the trio of grunge-addicted vocalist and guitarist Amar, bass player Andri, and drummer Egy quickly garnered notice from curious audience members. But it isn’t just their name that gave them their notoriety as an unforgettable live act. Playing a metal-edged version of Seattle-influenced rock, the band released its debut self-titled record to the praise of local rock fans. How did you come up with the band name?   Well, before we came up with the name, our drummer and I had been in a variety of short-lasting bands since we were in junior high. But those bands never lived long, which irritated both of us. So sometime in our senior year, I decided that the band should just be the two of us playing grunge and being on a constant lookout for bass players. I would sing and play guitar. You can imagine how long we’d been doing that, up to that point.   So we started rehearsing cover songs by grunge bands like Nirvana, Silverchair, Soundgarden, while throwing in a few of our original songs into the mix. And one day we were registering to play at a music festival when we realized we did not have a band name yet. And I quickly decided, because of our past and my assurance that we’d be broken up the next day, that we should call ourself Besok Bubar. This is ironic, because this ended up as our most serious band. A lot of people pay attention to us because the name makes them think of a joke band, I suppose.   Would you consider yourself strictly a grunge band?   The basis of our music is certainly built upon it. The first song our drummer and I learned was the Nirvana song ‘Rape Me.’ I wanted to play guitar because of [Nirvana’s] Kurt Cobain, and he wanted to play drums because of [Nirvana drummer] Dave Grohl. They are definitely teachers in a sense. But outside all that, we are also into metal, punk, and hardcore — lots of different music, as long as it rocks.

What was it about Nirvana that you identified with?

They taught us that music didn’t need to be complicated, and melodies could just be simple. Soundgarden also influenced us by showing us that there was more to the guitar than standard tuning. There’re also bands like Sepultura, Melvins, Pantera, and Metallica, which is why we basically wanted to sound like an alternative band with a heavy sound.   What is your artistic process like?   It’s pretty simple. I tend to play an acoustic guitar at home, and after I figured out a nice chord progression. I bring it to the guys and we jam on it. Just like that, really. We always write the lyrics last, because I sing and play guitar at the same time, so I need to really work on a melody and lyrics where I can do both well at the same time.   What do you mostly write about?   Basically about anything that is happening around us; something that everybody is aware of and that they care about.
