Because the world is gloriously complicated, sometimes you end up with two really incredible men you want to celebrate on Father’s Day!! This is my Stepdad, Bob Bourne! My Mom and I have been so lucky to have Bob in our lives. Though a very different man from my Dad (okay, except that they are both tall, blue eyed, blonde men born in August, named Robert. Except that….) Bob is a wonderful man in his own right. And he was the best Stepdad a girl like me could ever have asked for. He has a wicked sense of humor. Perhaps a little inappropriate. But always well intentioned. And he always makes me laugh. Sometimes despite myself! He’s also very smart, both about things and about people. He was a corporate salesman for years, and a lot of what I learned about how to network and how to talk to anyone I needed to listen to me, I learned from his example. A set of skills that were instrumental in my activism work. Bob is also a Vietnam Vet. And we have had many really great conversations about his experience. On his recommendation, I read a number of really good books about that war and about the experience of those who served and fought in it. Those books, and Bob’s experience helped give me an understanding and perspective that I never would have gotten from anywhere else. And just beyond that though? Bob is just a really good guy. A wonderful Stepdad to me and husband to my Mom. He has also, always been completely accepting of me. When I transitioned, he quickly and pretty easily switched to using my new name and pronouns. And he was one of the first to grasp that despite the exterior differences, I was still basically the same person I had always been. And he continued to be just as easy to talk to and hang out with as he has always been! I am so lucky to have two such incredible men for Dads!! And so lucky that Bob is one of those men!!!
