Prawn Crackers and Linguistics

So yesterday, I got another in the periodic series of running into linguistics just being at home. My husband, who’s Filipino-Canadian, had brought home from a recent trip some prawn crackers. Take a look at this bag:

So let’s go through this step by step. The Tagalog way to pronounce the name of this brand, Besuto, is apparently [bɛˈsuto], with the stress on the second syllable. Nothing too weird about that. Besuto doesn’t actually mean anything in Tagalog, so he just figured that it was someone’s name, probably the person who founded the company.

However, of late, he’s been learning some Japanese, and now the letters on the left side of the bag, ベスト, are legible to him. So that’s [besɯto], which if you were going to transliterate into Tagalog, would come out as Besuto. And once you’ve got it in Tagalog, you just shift the pronunciation to match up with the relevant vowels and stress rules.

But now that you have ベスト, you can go back one more step, which is that Japanese just borrowed English best [bɛst] there. And again, you have to make the new loanword match the Japanese phonology, meaning you need to break up the [st] by sticking that [ɯ] in the middle, and you glue an [o] on the end, because you can’t just end with a non-nasal consonant.

So because of the filtering through multiple different phonologies, the Tagalog word Besuto at the end is far enough away from the English best that it never occurs to even proficient English speakers that that’s what it started off as. Only when you can see the link with Japanese in between does it come clear. I like this kind of linguistics work, but I just wasn’t expecting it to be happening at home with prawn crackers. It’s really fun. ^_^
