The baby had been a late bloomer, but they finally presented as an alpha. Which... was surprising, to say the least. Both Dad and their big brother were betas, so there was almost an expectation for them to be a beta, too.
The older two took it in stride, getting some books to help them understand how to help their baby through different things. The biggest issue was their ruts, though. Happening every 3 months, the older two tried their best to help them through, but there wasn't much they could do. They floated the idea of hiring an omega, but it was quickly shot down. "I don't want strangers in my den with me."
Then something odd started happening. Big brother would snag some of his sibling's clothes, blankets, anything soft, and take it back to his room. It didn't take long for his room to have what looked like a nest of their items. He'd happily curl up in it each night, sleeping through the night for the first time in years. But hey, the siblings had always been close, so he probably just found comfort in their scent.
Until-
"Dad? Dad!" He hissed into the dark room. "Wake up!" The man grunted and flicked on his bedside lamp. "What's going on? You hurt?" He asked in a low voice, pushing himself into a half sitting position. "I think there's something wrong with me." Big Brother answered, moving closer to Dad. He grabbed the older man's hand and pulled it between his legs so he could feel the damp fabric. "What is it?" Dad asked, looking up to his son's nervous face. "I think... I think it's slick."
The three of them ended up in the hospital that night, the older kid absolutely terrified. A doctor came in after what felt like a thousand tests and a million years. "Well, good news. It's a very simple thing." She said calmly, directing her attention to Big Brother. "Simple?" "Simple." She nodded and set down her tablet. "You're an omega."
The room tensed up. Dad and the younger looked at each other, but the older one kept his eyes on the doctor. "....No I'm not. I'm a beta." He said carefully. "You're a heatless omega. We've been seeing it a little more lately, but it's still considered very rare." She pulled a chair over and sat beside his bed.
"Heatless omegas, as the name suggests, don't have heats. Often, they are falsely identified as betas. It's almost as if your omega decided to stay dormant." She explained. "What made it end the dormancy?" Dad asked, leaning forward slightly and taking his son's hand for support.
"We've found that it usually means his inner omega has found a worthy alpha. So I'd look into any new alphas in your life." She said and stood up with a smile. "I know this can be a lot. So I'll leave the three of you for now." The door clicked shut behind her, and the room stayed quiet for a moment.
"There's only one new alpha." Big Brother murmured quietly, eyes flicking to his sibling. The younger smiled and moved closer, taking his hand. "And apparently, you already think I'm worthy." They teased.
It'd be something new to navigate, but they could handle it. Dad's already getting pamphlets from the nurses and book recommendations. He'd be okay. They would all be okay together. As a pack should be.
