"Welcome to the Theatre": Diary of a Broadway Baby
Beth Leavel Sings Sondheim
August 1, 2025 | 54 Below | Evening | Cabaret | Solo | 1H 20M
An encore run from her Sondheim-themed cabaret last fall, Beth Leavel was at it again with even more knee-slapping stories now that Old Friends has been put to rest. Very little changed from her setlist between then and now, though she did add in the exquisite "Losing My Mind" and for that I'm grateful. I would love for her to dig a little deeper into the Sondheim trunk to do some hidden gems like "I Remember" from Evening Primrose or "Someone Woke Up" from Do I Hear a Waltz? Can you imagine how good she'd be at "That Dirty Old Man" from Forum? And for the love of god, someone please sit this woman down and introduce her to the wonder and majesty of Passion.
For me, her spoken interludes are the real highlight of these nights. She does a stunning job of acting/singing her way through the ballads of "Send in the Clowns" and "Being Alive" but what has me crying with laughter is when she just sort of starts talking about whatever comes to mind. There's always a story to be had. Would have also been fun if Kate Jennings Grant joined her for a duet, but ah well. Maybe next year.
Verdict: You Can Pry This Show Out of My Cold Dead Hands
A Note on Ratings
So my fan-girling over Beth Leavel (which started last summer when I was cast as Beatrice Stockwell in “The Drowsy Chaperone”) ain’t gonna fade anytime soon…
While I was in that show I was falling in love with “The Prom” and thought, damn I’d LOVE to play Dee Dee Allen someday…and after the depressive episode that was November I went headfirst into my old fandom ways and consoled myself with fic writing.
Cut to last week bursting into tears when after a night of auditions, I was asked to play Dee Dee for a gorgeous theatre company out in Connecticut.
This is going to be a feral fangirl summer, y’all! ❤️😭
If you love Sondheim this production celebrates his greatest work by those who adore his music, his 'Old Friends.'
