Brad Kane and Lea Salonga - A Whole New World 1992
Aladdin is a 1992 American animated musical fantasy film based on the Arabic folktale from One Thousand and One Nights. The story follows an Arabian street urchin named Aladdin, who discovers a magic lamp containing a genie, with whose help he disguises himself as a wealthy prince and tries to impress the Sultan of Agrabah to win the heart of his free-spirited daughter, Princess Jasmine, as the Sultan's evil vizier, Jafar, plots to steal the magic lamp. Composed by Alan Menken, the musical score features six songs with lyrics written by both Howard Ashman and Tim Rice (who took over following Ashman's death).
Aladdin was released on November 11, 1992, to critical and commercial success: critics praised the animation and Robin Williams's performance as the Genie, and it became the highest-grossing film of the year, with an earning of over $504 million in worldwide box-office revenue. On release, it became the first animated feature to reach the half-billion-dollar mark, and was the fifth highest-grossing film at the time of its release and the highest-grossing animated film of all time until it was surpassed by The Lion King (1994). The film's home VHS release set a sales record, grossing approximately $500 million in the US.
"A Whole New World" is the signature song from the film. A duet originally recorded by singers Brad Kane and Lea Salonga in their respective roles as the singing voices of the main characters Aladdin and Jasmine, the ballad serves as both the film's love and theme song. It garnered an Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 65th Academy Awards, a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, and a Grammy Award for Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or for Television, as well as a Grammy Award for Song of the Year, the only Disney song to do so. In the same year, the pop version sung by Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle was also nominated for Record of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals, winning the latter. Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott performed the song in the 2019 live-action version of Aladdin. Zayn Malik and Zhavia Ward did their version of the song for the end credits.
"A Whole New World" received a total of 81% yes votes! Previous Tim Rice polls: #6 "Hakuna Matata".
