“Beth, c’mon, I know you are awake, I could see your eyeballs moving from under your eyelids.” There’s even a small smirk but not one movement and it only gets her annoyed. “You know, when I left her with him in California I thought she would be so much happier. Like, if it’s me who dies young, I don’t want her to have to go through what I did so to save her from that, I left and I know it’s different. My mom didn’t have a choice, she just died and a part of me died with her but I left Ruby on my own without any memories of having a mother and that makes me the worst of all because how does a mother just leave her child? Sometimes when I hold her, I feel like we aren’t as connected as I was with my mom and it hurts like I’m trying so hard to make it work but.. do you think she even loves me? Like really loves me because I know that takes time but I don’t want to lose her, it’s been three months now but I feel like a part of us is missing.”

There’s really no way she could ever stop feeling sad even as she packs up her daughter things and looks through everything she had held so close. Ruby’s room is the only place she enjoy lately, it makes her feel better looking at all the drawings pinned to the wall and the pictures of everyone her daughter has every loved, the people she called family and said I love you to when ever she saw them. Her fingers run over a badge that’s out of date but had meant something to Beth and she gave to Ruby. The little girl wear it everyday for a whole year before she lost it once to only show up in the car days later and Ruby left it in a box on her nightstand. “She loved you so much, anything we ever did, it was you she asked for and I’m sure I should be mad but it’s not like she doesn’t ask for me when she was with you but the amount of love you gave her, she loved it so much. Being able to be with you and how you did everything for her, you were her hero and I think she wanted to grow up to be you, to help other girls be strong and fearless and I’m glad you gave that to her. I’m glad she left with that in her heart.”

Watching as Beth walks down the aisle brings tears of joy to her face because the only person that the brunette is looking at is the man waiting for her to stand by his side. It makes her heart swell up because no one saw this coming and they fought for each other and they loved each other and now, they would have this bond that no one could ever break. It makes her feel jealous but nothing too serious, she wants this, she wants the happiness she sees in Beth’s eyes, let nothing could ever ruin this love she has for this man that holds so much of her heart. Her make up probably looks fucked up because now she’s wiping away her tears. Shayla still gets flashback of that night, when the worst thing that she could ever see her friend go through but that doesn’t shine as bright as this moment. Later that night when she steals Beth for a dance and she holds her sister closer to her, whisper in her ear, “I always knew you deserved more than what you got and I couldn’t be more happier for you. I love you so much and it’s only the beginning of a new beginning for you.”

It worked perfectly for her, when Amy left to be with their dad and Shayla was on her trip back, she never thought she would have anyone else to be there for her again. That was until she found out that Beth was Ruby’s aunt. It still sounds crazy to her because she loved Beth, she would do anything for the girl and have this connection made it even more real so they of course grow closer. But when the moment she found out that Ruby had a tumor in her brain, the first person she called had been Beth. She couldn’t stop her tears as soon as the brunette got off of the elevator and her hold on her had been so tight, “it was supposed to just be a check up. I c-can’t do this again, watching my mom go through this was enough for me to lose myself but she’s my kid, my baby. Beth, what do I do? What do I tell her? I did this to her, I gave her this and it’s on me. Beth, please for once just tell me what to do and I’ll do it but I can’t look into her eyes and tell her that she will never make it to the fifth grade, that this is it for her.”

No matter where they moved to or where they built their lives, they always found each other and this was one of those days, her blonde hair hides her grey hair so well and she looks so tired from all the years she spend with her kids and grand kids. She can’t find it in herself to place the flowers on the grave, it still kills her, it’s been almost 40 years and it still hurts the same. “I keep telling myself that my mom is taking care of her, that she isn’t in so much pain anymore and is so happy to be up there but god, there isn’t a moment when I don’t wish that she had every single moment with us.” This was the death of someone they loved so much, she wipes away her tears with the sleeve of her sweater. Beth had seen her this way too many times but Beth never once let’s her feel bad for it, she stood by her when the first year went by and she was there for Beth because although she started her own live, she always made room for Ruby. “Fuck, I’m too old to still be like this.”

The four day weekend was all about having a girl’s weekend, something that ended to be one of her favorite memories, they camped out to watch the stars, something you don’t see in Brooklyn and they went down to Brighton Beach to see the ocean, something Ruby said she had missed and it was just nice to be with the people that she cared and loved so much. It was carefree and full of laughs and lots of carpool karaoke. They got lost a few times along the way but they made the best of it, never anything too serious and it was all about just being a family who wanted nothing more than to spent time together. Most of the things had been based on what the little girl wanted to do and although most of the places they tried out ended up being terrible, at the end of the night it ended up with Ruby’s laugh echoing throughout the room and Beth and Shayla tickled her so hard, she cried. Pictures she took on her Polaroid ended up being showed to everyone at the station and school and she even kept it in her office to remind herself what was waiting for her at home. @beth-moran
TEXT: No actually, I had a brother here for a hot second, but he left- and just left the mom with her, and it's a whole other story. But Shay's the mom, and I guess now she's a single mom, but she has me, so not alone. I've told her all about my singing husband, and she's excited to meet you.
