Jessica’s Guide to Dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey ★
I wanted to read this book because I loved the previous book I read by Beth Fantaskey, Jekel Loves Hyde. If you love Jekel Loves Hyde and paronormal/vampire stuff, then this book is not for you. Even though this is indeed about vampires, this is a sad version of the genre.
Summary:
The undead can really screw up your senior year . . .
Marrying a vampire definitely doesn’t fit into Jessica Packwood’s senior year “get-a-life” plan. But then a bizarre (and incredibly hot) new exchange student named Lucius Vladescu shows up, claiming that Jessica is a Romanian vampire princess by birth—and he’s her long-lost fiancé. Armed with newfound confidence and a copy of Growing Up Undead: A Teen Vampire’s Guide to Dating, Health, and Emotions, Jessica makes a dramatic transition from average American teenager to glam European vampire princess. But when a devious cheerleader sets her sights on Lucius, Jess finds herself fighting to win back her wayward prince, stop a global vampire war—and save Lucius’s soul from eternal destruction.
Review:
★ star
I thought that I would read a vampire book and this one seemed interesting since I liked the author’s previous work. This was a sad disappointment. So the beginning is okay. Guess it was a little intriguing having a dark and mysterious guy suddenly come in, and was kind of interesting hearing about her their lineage. It's just, there wasn't anything remarkable about it. Nothing that made me want to read a part again or anything like that. Then it gets really slow and quite boring after the first few chapters. It just loses the little appeal it has with the vampire bit. You just get used to it after a while and it gets old. There isn't anything to up the interest or make it intriguing again.
As for the characters, Lucian is kind of interesting with his foreign lineage and upbringing. His manners just add to the package. Although he has his good points with his compliments to her and trying to make her get passed her insecurities, I just get so bored when it gets to his letters.
Then, there is Jessica. She is a very rationale girl that is very head strong. She grew up in an American style, and as such has grew to be very independent and doesn't want to be tied down by his culture and the arranged marriage. I get why she doesn't want a marriage, I just disliked how she would even run from all things of her past, that involves her birth parents. She also denies everything unless she has solid proof, especially vampires. I especially don't get that after all the shit she has seen. Then I totally question her sudden change about Lucian. One day she just goes to school and tells Mindy, "I'm not sure if Jake and I are a great match. He's nice, but I don't know if there's a real spark there." What the hell happened with all the he defending him against Lucian and trying to get out or away from Lucian as much as possible. I hate how she was doing this run about of not wanting him and then wanting him when half of the book is already over, when someone else takes an interest.
Overall, the book was a sad excuse for a vampire romance book. It was terribly slow and boring. Nothing could have revived this book.
