Bettablr, I need your opinion!
So, I told my brother’s friend that I would watch his betta fish, over the holiday break, back in December. He lives in a dorm and he was flying back to his home country for the break. Not knowing anyone else who knows about betta fish, my brother volunteered me, knowing I have a betta fish. It would only be a week or two, so I agreed to watch over him and feed him for the break, free of charge. My brother brought the fish in a Tupperware container back to my state when he came home for the break. No food, the fish’s tank, heater, or filter. Red flag. I’m broke and only have one tank, I do have a little isolation tank though, for an emergency, if my little guy gets sick. I wasn’t ideal and would be harder to maintain this way, but it’s still doable. At least he would have more room then a Tupperware container.
I was under the impression when I agreed to this, that I would get this guys number or that he would call me with some information. Like maybe at least the fishes name??? The brand of food his betta favors? Treats he likes ? Some concern to make sure I could care for him while he’s gone?
What i got is nothing. I’ve had no direct contact with this guy. It’s March now.
And at first it’s my brothers fault for completely forgetting to take the fish back with him after the break. However no one but me noticed that they forgot the fish. I waited to see if anyone else was going to say anything and a couple days later I think it was my brother who said that he remembered he forgot it after the guy finally asked a few days after school started where the fish was. He then said he would bring it with him the next time he comes to visit, as he does this regularly and we are a couple hours away by car.
He comes back and visits once for a weekend, in this timeline and my parents drive down to visit him once or twice in between the beginning of the year and now. He forgets to ask them to bring the fish with him. The owner hasn’t contacted me or said anything since that first time asking about the betta in the very beginning of January.
Another key thing I hear in between the visits is, not only has this owner not asked about his betta at all, he goes out and buys 2 or 3 other tank pets. One being an axolotl. I’ll once again remind you he lives in a shared college dorm room.
I have been caring for this guy and feeding him out of pocket for months for free.
He didn’t come in the best health either, but I tried to blame it on the car ride stress.
My brother is now back in town for spring break and says now he’s going to take it back because he remembers this time.
I don’t feel at all inclined to relinquish this betta fish back to this guy??? It really seems like he doesn’t care and is one of those people that think fish are just super disposable pets??? Not a real pet like a cat or a dog. And that pisses me off. It would weigh on me if I give him back and I never hear anything about him again and he ends up dying of neglect.
My parents are saying I’m being ridiculous and stupid and that it’s not even my fish and that there isn’t a decision to be made. (Mind you my parents are those type of people who don’t see fish as pets but as disposable things that die in a couple months)
I don’t know what to do.
I do have two different tanks already because I had plans to update my betta. So I have the space and the resources to house them both. Even if it’s until I find someone responsible who’s into betas or I keep him myself.
I don’t even think the owner will throw a fit if I say no. Like if I threaten to only relinquish him if he shows initiative and drives himself to get his fish from me, to show that he actually cares about this betta, I don’t think he will. I really really don’t think he cares about this fish, guys.
I don’t know what to do. I hope I’m not being too stupid but if this was a dog or a cat I think my parents would throw a fuckin fit. I’ve seen enough animal neglect in my life and if I can actually make a difference this time, I would like to.
Any advice or opinions would be appreciated.
I luv this boy 💞🐟🌿
tiberius has some new friends. thanks wayfaring strangers zine
Fish help needed right now! My poor betta Gelos... his tail fin seems to be ripped pretty bad. The rays are flowing freely, and the rip seems pretty square. I took out all the plastic fake plants and checked the filter after noticing this. I just added some danios (after noticing this. they were already in my position and the store does not refunds), and I’m afraid they might bully him and make it worse. Any ideas?
Raven (also in his new 10gal ) Gotta figure out better lighting, this guy is super shimmery but you can't ever see it 😫
The Royal Family of Bettas.. 😁😍👑🐠
placed a nerite snail into tiberius’ tank....this is the first time i have EVER seen him flare
