. By the Book :: Single Line ((Zoom In)) . #getoutoftownvibe . For those who don’t know, I decided to drive to Colorado from my home in British Columbia to tick off a few projects between the points. Some of my family came out to Denver for my latest mural project, and we stuffed ourselves in my Ford Ranger and headed back West toward Utah about as soon as the paint dried (my brother now lives in Logan and we’re coming to visit!). It’s not often I share the road with others, but we’re making the most of our close quarters by taking stock of the wide skies and open road. . Here’s a moment from our wanderings into the Colorado National Monument. I gave up the front seat to Amy, who had never been out West before, so she could really experience this place unfold. Listening to her exclamations of the grandeur, scale, and color in this region was just about as good as experiencing them first hand. There’s real power in these places, and we are so privileged to have them available to play in and ponder. . . Sketchbook Scrawls :: Single Line ((Zoom In)) . #getoutoftownvibe . This is one of the four sketchbooks I’ve filled over the last two months on the road. It’s been fun to keep the studio light again, though, admittedly, I’ve also been working on a few murals at the same time. (More on that time come...) . I hadn’t a clue that taking my first sketch book with me on the road for the #betweenthepoints project six years ago would then grow into the #getoutoftownvibe series and lead me down the path that is this daily art practice I work with now. Funny how curiosities can change you. . . I’m excited to go through these pages of hand drawn memories and see what textures came about. . Down By The Riverside :: Single Line ((Zoom In)) #getoutoftownvibe . Mornings at camp usually involve coffee, a stretch, and a single line drawing. I’ve been asked how I create these drawings so I’ve broken down the steps. . HOW IT IS MADE: First: touch the pen to the paper and don’t lift it up until the full composition is laid out. It’s one train of thought, one moment, one single line. Next: Detailing- work to accentuate and flesh out the drawing by adding shading and details to the line work. Final: Compare - does the drawing feel like the moment you are within. Document, and onto the next. . They’re somewhat quick, and I try not to overthink them. Working in this way keeps me from overanalyzing the art process. I’m trying to work within the subconscious and get out of my own way. . I’m on the road to Nelson to spend a bit of time wandering the woods and creating art up at @baldfacelodge. . Follow the Flow :: Single Line . ((Zoom In)) #getoutoftownvibe . Spring thaw means the water coming down from the alpine is fast and fluid. The trees glow with fresh budding branches, and the birds can’t help but tell you all about it. The forests are shaking off their winter coats and coming out to feel the sunshine... and so shall we. . I prepped my water wings this past week in Oregon and now I’m off to Powell River for the next week with a ship full of Sharons. . Between The Points :: Single Line . #getoutoftownvibe . As I drew along the side of Hwy 3, a kind man stopped and asked me “what’s the trouble?” To which I responded “absolutely nothing”. . I’m back on the road back to @baldfacelodge under a moody morning sky. I like to do this drive over two days so I can really take my time and take it in. Last night I slept under the stars, and this morning woke to low broken clouds and filtered sun. I’ve taken this drive from Nelson to Squamish a number of times this winter heading to and from @Baldfacelodge, and each commute holds something new. I love travel, time on the road, and all the pit stops and detours along the way. .
