I'm writing my Lee Kanker Style Analysis and I can't find a place for this passage. Here it is as a standalone post.
This is a weird comparison, but… Have you ever noticed how much Lee looks like Bev Bighead?
Mrs. Bighead is an empty nester, clearly far older than the tween/teenage Lee. Yet their designs are very similar (in broad strokes; Lee is not a frog, as far as we know.) What I’m saying is Lee looks like a woman in her 50s. They have surprisingly similar body shapes, with obvious changes attributable to age, art style, and species. Even their hair is similar!
I'm not trying to cry plagiarism here; rather, I'm making a point that Lee is (probably unintentionally) modelled after a grouchy middle-aged mother, just as Mrs. Bighead was. Even their outfits are practically the same. (I will concede that colour-wise, Bev’s clothes are a dead ringer for Sarah, who is, in fact, a frog.)
This all fits in very well with my reading of Lee as a parentified child, forced to look after her two younger sisters while their mom is out working and searching for men. She acts tough and mature out of necessity. Speaking of which, her eyes being obscured by hair is amazing because it prevents us from getting a good look at how she’s feeling. Have you ever seen Lee looking truly sad, aside from in “Nagged to Ed” when the Kankers all burst into seemingly fake tears? They say the eyes are the nipples of the face windows to the soul. Her hair is like armour preventing her from appearing vulnerable (so emo!)
Thus concludes my brain dump. I wish I had Paramount+. I haven't seen a Nicktoon in years
