Beverley Allitt, Angel of Death
Beverley Allitt
Beverley Gail Allitt is an English serial killer convicted of murdering four children, attempting to murder three others and causing grievous bodily harm to a further six. Her crimes were committed from February-April 1991 in the children's ward of Kesteven Hospital where she was employed as a nurse. Allitt was born in Grantham with two sisters and a brother. As a teenager, she would often volunteer for babysitting jobs and left school at the age of 16 to take a course in nursing. On 22nd February 1991, seven-week-old Liam Taylor was admitted to the ward with a chest infection and was murdered shortly after, 11-year-old Timothy Hardwich was then murdered on 5th March. On 8th March a 1-year-old girl was admitted with a chest infection, Allitt attempted to murder her but she was resuscitated and transferred to another hospital where she recovered. On 20th March Allitt attempted to murder a 5-year-old boy with an insulin overdose on three occasions, the boy was transferred to another hospital where he recovered, the pattern of children almost dying and then being transferred and recovering happened twice more. 2-month-old Becky Phillips was admitted to the ward and administered an insulin overdose which she later died from at home. 15-month-old Claire Peck was admitted to the hospital on 22nd April and went into cardiac arrest, she was resuscitated but died from a second cardiac arrest after a period of being left alone with Allitt. Allitt had attacked thirteen children, four fatally, before she was charged. It was only following the death of Becky that medical staff became suspicious of the unusually high number of cardiac arrests on the children's ward and police were called. It was found Allitt had access to drugs and was the only nurse on duty for all of the attacks. Allitt was found guilty and sentenced to thirteen concurrent life sentences. She remains in prison now. Allitt's motives have never been fully explained.
When Beverley Allitt was was 17-years-old, she took a pre-nursing training course and was hired by the Grantham and Kesteven General Hospital as a trainee nurse and she worked on the paediatric ward. It was Allitt’s job to look after the children on the ward but she did the exact opposite. 7-week old Liam Taylor died after being treated for a chest infection. 11-year-old Timothy Hardwick died after being treated for an epileptic fit. 2-month-old Becky Phillips was released from hospital where she died after suffering convulsions. 15-month-old Claire Peck died after a routine asthma treatment. All of these children were under the care of Beverley Allitt, and nine other children narrowly escaped death. The police were finally contacted following Claire Peck’s death as it became evidence this was no coincidence and Allitt was arrested. She administered huge doses of insulin to at least two of the children. An air bubble was found in another. The causes of death for the rest of the children were undetermined. Her motive was never fully explained but she showed symptoms of Münchausen syndrome by proxy. She was sentenced to life imprisonment.
At the age of seventeen, Beverley Allitt took a pre-nursing training course and was employed by the Grantham and Kesteven General Hospital as a trainee nurse on the pediatric ward – looking after children. The problem was, the children on Ward Four just got more and more ill. Liam Taylor died of a heart attack two days after being admitted for a chest infection. Timothy Hardwick died after being treated for an epileptic fit. Becky Phillips died after being released from hospital, after suffering from convulsions at home. Claire Peck died after routine treatment for asthma. All of these children had been under the care of Beverley Allitt. Nine other children contracted life-threatening diseases after being under her care. Following Claire Peck’s death, hospital authorities realized that if this was a coincidence, it was a very large and unlikely one – and they contacted the police. Tests on Paul Crampton revealed that he had an extremely high level of insulin in his system, which could only have come about from being injected with the drug whilst in hospital. At Allitt’s trial, a jury heard how she believed she was doing no wrong. She was found guilty of murdering four children, attempting to murder another three and causing grievous bodily harm to six others.
