Beverly Fishman’s sculptural #urethane paintings explore the human condition in terms of contemporary society: they confront the ways in which our #lifestyle has been transformed from a simple indication of overall well-being to a cause of disease; “lifestyle” has itself become an object of medical attention, exemplifying a turning point in the era of modern clinical science and diagnosis. Fishman’s abstracted, minimalist shapes and simplistic, bold color schemes employ scale shifts and chromatic juxtapositions to turn small commodities into remedies for health, youth, sexual prowess, and the transcendence of death. Nowadays, #drugs both construct and contest individual identity; taking medications are complex symbolic acts, infused with diverse meanings regarding the physical body and our sense of self. Fishman creates her work through a combination of industrial and hand-based practices, their reflective surfaces, physical presence, and phenomenological impact make these works socially critical. They emphasize our pervasive medical condition that extends from the physical to the virtual and from the personal to the political. Advancements in clinical medicine and technology have come hand-in-hand with a darker and somewhat bleak psychological reality: we no longer aim to just cure the sick — we seek a cure for any general ailment in every aspect of our lives. Fishman’s work confronts the unrealistic and exploitative nature of #bigpharma, with their promise of panacea for the right price.
