Gabi about Team Redline and his friendship with Max on Beyond The Grid

"[Max] has been helping me since F3."

"In what way?"

"We do a lot of sim together. I am part-- I'm ambassador of his sim racing team since '23, that is Team Redline, and I practice a lot with the guys. They're the best sim drivers in the world. They're not real drivers but they are sim drivers. They're very impressive, there are kids there that are very impressive, they have very good techniques and they are very smart people. And for example one of them is called Chris Lulham and Max brought him to real racing now and he's racing in GT3 and the guy is doing amazing, like he's doing an amazing job. I always talk about him with Max because he's winning races, he won the 24h of Spa in his first year so you see how talented they are. So--"

"He's a good teacher as well?"

"A little bit. [laughing] Quite good. And we practice together since F3, F2 and now in F1."

"I love the vibe between you and Max whenever we get the two of you together in a press conference--"

"We can not--"

"Yeah, note to self: don't put them together next time. But you do clearly get on. I always think with Max: what you see is what you get. Is it the same for you as a driver?"

"What you see of him?"

"He's just very straightforward."

"Yes. Straightforward, no fake. Like, he's zero fake. Whatever he's in front of the cameras, he is outside of the cameras. Maybe people don't see sometimes the good side of him because he's so straightforward that people sometimes put him a bit as a villain and it's not exactly like this. He has a very good heart and helping people and helping me but yeah, he's the guy that he shows."

"He helps you. Do you think if you became a genuine rival on track, a championship rival, do you think that would change?"

"Yes. Absol-- I mean, he wouldn't give me the tools, the tips he gives probably because we are fighting but this is normal, you know. It's our profession and that's what we do and I still believe it would be respectful to each other, friends and I don't think we would be practising as much as we do together any more because I wouldn't want him to see some things and he wouldn't want me to see other things."

"You say you've been an ambassador of his sim racing team since '23 but you've know him since a long time before that, right?"

"Yeah, like I know him for quite a while but let's say we started this friendship in '23. But I know him since '17, in karting when I took our first picture together when I was like here and was the first time I met him."

"That came up the other day, didn't it, actually? He remembered that photo being taken."

"Yeah, exactly, it was in Adria. It was amazing."

The Abu Dhabi of it all aside, I’m SO happy to be hearing from Laura Mueller on Beyond the Grid this week. Such a good listen. She’s brilliant and I absolutely love hearing more on her journey to f1, who and what inspire her, and about her working relationship with Ocon.

And while we’re at it, fuck the f1 movie for how they portrayed the whole female engineer trope; One of the many reasons that the f1 movie annoys me is how they played into that stereotype and stole inspiration from Mueller being f1’s first female race engineer then reducing Kerry Condon’s character to a forced and unnecessary romance plot. Disappointing as hell!!!!

TC: So JB, your career, you experienced every emotion under the sun, didn't you really? Highs—highs and lows. So when you look at 2026, we just end on the current year, who do you look at this year ['s grid] and go "They're like me. I can relate to that driver. He drives like me, his attitude is like me. If all the ducks align, he can win the world championship even if he hasn't already." Who's that person?  JB: It's a difficult, difficult question to ask. You know, we're all built so differently and I'm not inside any of the drivers' heads. I think in my younger years, I would say probably Oscar [Piastri]. His driving st— TC: You were chilled.  JB: Yeah. TC: JB, can I say—I remember being at the showdown in when were we? January 2000, it was you and Bruno Junqueira. Now I know the sort of innocence of youth, what you don't know, what you don't know. But I was bowled over at Barcelona then just thinking, "How can JB be so relaxed? His entire future rests on what we're doing now." JB: Yeah, you know. You go fr— TC: Oscar-esque I suppose. JB: —go from being a, you know, a kid that likes racing cars to an F1 driver. Your world changes, not just your career, but everything else in your world changes.  TC: But very Oscar-esque, I think is—  JB: Yeah, I think so. And the racing was what I was all about. You know, I wasn't bad at doing media and sponsor events, but it wasn't what I enjoyed. It was just the driving that I loved. And also, you know, in moments in my career, I wasn't there mentally. You know, I wasn't strong enough at certain moments. And I don't want to put that on Oscar. But you know, when you look at last year, there were moments in time that I felt that he wasn't able to get the best out of himself. And sometimes you do tighten up and that was a weakness of mine. So and 2009, it was in plain sight and I don't mind talking about it because it's something that I've worked on. So yeah, I think probably Oscar and it's—it's lovely to see him and his dedication and his, his focus and he just wants to go racing.  Very like Max as well. Now I'm not like Max in terms of I'm nowhere near as good as him.

Remember when Charles said he will miss “Carlos the person”? It’s soo devastating because four years is a really long time to be so close to someone and then realize you won’t be able to be as close anymore. It’s the most sincere answer he could have given because it’s not just about the racing or the fun or the banter it’s about having a teammate you can get along with so well that you will genuinely miss HIM and that is such a unique and rare teammate relationship and I’m glad they could experience it. And now that they’re no longer teammates we can still see how they’re always happy to see each other and how sometimes it still looks like they’re teammates when they’re walking together in the paddock or talking during the drivers’ parade because they still genuinely like spending time together and I think that’s beautiful.
