Happy Birthday Lucille Clifton! . . "I do not feel inhibited or bound by what I am. That does not mean that I have never had bad scenes relating to being Black and/or a woman, it means that other people’s craziness has not managed to make me crazy." . . . Lucille Clifton was born in New York on June 27, 1936. Her poetry collection, "Blessing the Boats" won the National Book Award in 2000, and several of her other collections earned her Pulitzer Prize nominations. She won an Emmy among more accolades for her poetry and published over sixteen children's books. As a mother and a poet, her career is an inspiration to every Black woman whose responsibility to family and passion to create wrestle with each other against society's judgement and supposed norms. Clifton was elected the Chancellor of the Academy of Poets and served as Poet Laureate of Maryland. Her work, her life, her legacy is a gift to us all. . . . #blackwomenwriters #womenwriters #blackwriters #community #blackpoets #blackwomenpoets #poetsofinstagram #poetry #poets #beyondfear #blackscholars #blackvoices #writers #blackhistory #ancestors #celebrate #comecelebratewithme #legacy #inspiration #blessingtheboats
