As TK and Carlos embrace parenthood together, moving into a new house coincides with the second anniversary of Gabriel’s death, and both Carlos and Jonah are struggling with their sleep. But there’s another second anniversary coming up – and one sleepless night, Carlos finds inspiration through Jonah for how to celebrate two years married to TK.  

Chapter 1 - Lullaby: While Carlos, TK and Jonah settle into their new house, an unresolved issue involving his dad begins to surface for Carlos - and Chief Bridges is on his mind too.

Chapter 2 - Dreamers: A sleepy Carlos reflects on the times TK has given him butterflies, the decision to adopt Jonah, and the downfall of Chief Bridges – and how everything is linked.

Chapter 3 - Lamplight: When Carlos wakes from a nightmare involving Bridges and Gabriel, both TK and Jonah help him in their different ways – and Carlos recalls telling his mom the truth about Bridges.

Chapter 4 - Porchlight: TK and Carlos' second wedding anniversary arrives, and Carlos finds peace with his family in an imperfect but beautiful world.

Carlos stands still, shakes his head. “Carlos?” “I get it,” Carlos says, smiling as his eyes well with tears, silvery in the low winter sunlight. “I’m the one who needed to get it. It was me.” “Get what?” TK looks at him quizzically. “Baby?” Carlos lets out a breathy laugh, gazes back at him with wonder as a tear slips down his cheek. “Baby–” TK brushes the tear away with his thumb and keeps his hand on Carlos’ cheek. “What did you need to get?” Carlos takes a deep breath, leans into TK’s hand. “Where all this love comes from,” he says. TK chuckles. “What do you mean?” “Baby. I want us to adopt Jonah. I’m ready.”

Ash slams his hand against a metal door and cold air hits Eiji in the face. Only now does he realize that his cheeks are burning, and he can't tell if it's because of all the running, the liquor he drank accidentally or the fact that he was holding Ash's hands like it was normal.

The thudding of the music stops as the heavy door swings shut behind them, like one single boisterous clap of appreciation for their little heist with a finality that warns them to never do something similar again.

Okumura Eiji decides to become the assistant of his friend Ibe and move with him to New York, where he meets his strange but beautiful neighbor Ash Lynx who has the weird habit of always coming up with new names for his ugly cat. And while Eiji doesn‘t really know why so many men keep visiting Ash, Ash also assumes a few things about Eiji that are not necessarily true.

It has been a long hard day, so here is something cute from the final chapter of Butterflies. I can't wait to share but I will also miss working on this fic. It's meant so much to me and I'm so grateful for every reader, whether you've been reading along or will read in the future. Thank you with my whole heart. Chapters 1-3 are on Ao3 here :)

Explaining the concept of a wedding anniversary to Jonah resulted in TK having to officiate a wedding between an Action Man and Eeyore, so the family are a little late hitting the road, but spirits are high. For the occasion, TK is wearing jeans and a pink t-shirt – silver pendant on display because Jonah likes to play with it gently – while Carlos has opted for a brown and white flannel that had belonged to his dad, and navy chinos. Jonah has decided to wear his red cargo shorts due to their many useful pockets, and his bright blue t-shirt that has a cartoon motif of a jaguar. Next to the jaguar is a yellow letter J.

J for jaguar.

Jaguars live in the jungle, which also begins with J – and J is for Jonah. This pleases him greatly. Other good words beginning with J are: Jump, which you do with your legs and is facilitated by papas, beds and trampolines. Jellyfish, which are wibbly sea creatures with tentacles. Jellybeans, which aren’t at all like jellyfish – they’re delicious colorful candy and Jonah isn’t allowed the blue ones for some reason. And joke, which is something you say that makes everyone laugh raucously. For example: Knock knock; who’s there? JONAH. Jonah who? JONAH. That’s Jonah’s favorite.

Chapter 2 of Butterflies is now on Ao3, so this is from chapter 3, in which we see TK and Carlos visit Andrea (this chapter is also cute I promise!...):

Andrea slides her hands down her face slowly. “Why did he do it?” she whispers. Her eyes are still closed. She bites her quivering lower lip as if to keep it steady. Like she's holding on tight to some sort of edge, but with her bared teeth.

TK feels her shuddering under his palm. He’s glad Carlos isn’t touching her right now. He thinks it would scare him to feel his mother’s energy like this. The rumble of something about to blow.

“Money,” Carlos says, “And fear. Because Dad was getting closer to figuring it all out. And as soon as I did, he turned the gun on me.”

Andrea looks at him now, slowly. The whites of her eyes are red; pupils dilated and deep black. Eyes like poppies. “You told me you were shot by a suspect on the run.”

“I had to tell you that,” Carlos says. He hangs his head. It feels too heavy for his neck. His collar is too tight even with his tie removed and top button popped. “Over the phone. I had to.”

“Bridges was going to take you from me too?”

Carlos nods. Did she need that detail? He isn’t sure. But he can’t scoop the words back into his mouth. He’s tried to make things untrue before, by simply not speaking of them - and he won’t do that anymore. She wouldn’t want him to, anyway. Not really. Not even this.

Andrea slaps her hands on her thighs and gets up, brushes past TK who has to hold onto the armrest of the couch to keep his balance.

“Ma, what are you doing?”
