When it comes to mixed and biracial characters…

Why is it that when a character is Black x non-Black, the kids always look completely ambiguous or whitewashed to all hell? Now, before y'all come for me, yes, I know mixed kids IRL can be completely light-skinned or favor one side phenotypically. What I'm talking about is how media never shows the other side. We rarely, if ever, see mixed dark-skinned girls or mixed kids who actually retain clear Afro features and hair textures.

Take Luz from The Owl House. She's supposed to be Afro-Latina… but when you look at her and her parents, you can see my confusion. The Black traits are completely dialed back.

It’s the same pattern everywhere. Look at Ginny from Ginny & Georgia or Mary Anne from The Baby-Sitters Club reboot. It's always the same hyper-light, ambiguous look with zero tighter textures or Afro features. Even in cartoons like Fairly OddParents, they'll give a character a dark-skinned Black mom but make the daughter look completely white with blonde hair and blue eyes.

Why is it that when a character is mixed with Black, those Black traits are the absolute first things to be erased? It really feels purposeful, doesn't it??

Side-eyeing the White and non-Black POC artists that draw curly/kinky hair and braids on White/non-Black POC characters but somehow, someway, magically can't do the same for Black characters because "it's too hardddduhh" or "it doesn't fit my styleeee" and then slapping a straight wig on them.

Y'all be creating the most complex, gravity-defying, layers-on-layers anime-ass hairstyles, but somehow simplifying or detailing locs, braids, cornrows, and an afro is sooo hard for you.

Quite the... "stylistic" choice, huh?

I can't be the only one who has noticed, but every time there is fan art of characters, particularly ones that are known to be violent, mean, and probably bullies…they are always drawn dark-skinned or at least darker than the other group of characters that are always depicted as light-skinned or white if they happen to be a shy, cute, childish, or 'innocent' type character. Not saying ALL do this (for example, you have some amazing sonic fanartists that have all the cast have their muzzles melanated, which is really awesome to see), but I am recognizing a pattern, and I am seeing some bias and colorism all up in it…especially in the fact majority that are doing this are non-Black artists.

You ever see a non-human character so explicitly Black-coded, or a character you know damn well would be Black if they were human... but then you got mfs in your comments being like, "Erm, actually they're [whatever creature they are]" or "Why are we making everything a race thinggg?"

This is exactly how I feel about the Pinkie Pie debate. (There are so many other examples, but I'm using her for today.) There is no fucking way you can look at me and tell me you have seen a white person, not a biracial/mixed person, a WHITE person with a natural afro. And no, I don't mean an artificially made one that took 500+ treatments, forced heat manipulation, perms, and other forms (such as examples down here):

You ever join a fandom and it feels too good to be true? Like, so far (and I mean so far), there's no racism or total bullshit. Everything seems swell and dandy, but you're still completely on edge. Because of the history of racist fandoms, you never know when things are gonna pop off, so you just quietly watch.

That's exactly me right now after rejoining a fandom I loved when I was younger. I'm literally just looking around waiting for the other shoe to drop, because people apparently can't be fucking normal about Black fans and Black creators for five seconds.

You know what really gets on my nerves about fandoms?

The disposable black girlfriend trope.

Can we get a reverse where the white girl gets disposed for a black girlfriend because this gets on my ever loving nerves.

You get a white dude or a non-black POC dude have more chemistry for black woman but all of a sudden that ends with some shallow, forced chemistry with some white chick who either barely interacts with or interacts with but they're more like friends/sibling relationship.

It's so fucking stupid 😭
