No one who takes BFDI seriously thinks Firey was justified in not letting Leafy into Dream Island, and many people see it as an obvious attempt to justify a second season, but I think it can work if we view Firey as an irrational guy who made a mistake.

Sometimes, small transgressions from our closest friends can feel worse than objectively worse actions from those who we don't know as well. To be sure, no one is obligated to like your gift (especially because of an inherent incompatibility that you did not consider!), but the reaction can still hurt you.

Firey just being irrational and needing more time is supported by the "Shift" (TPOT 15), where he ends up letting Leafy into Dream Island after she is prevented from buying it.

And by the time Firey realizes he made a mistake, everyone wants Leafy dead anyway because of how careless she was. Firey and Leafy are two flawed people whose irrational reactions cause problems for themselves, each other, and others, but they still care for each other deeply, as the eponymous "return of the hang glider" shows.

Warning warning! I will talk about BFDIA Episode 25 here! Spoilers under the cut!

Okay, if you are seeing this, you are caught up, yeah? Good.

I wanna talk about Firey. Specifically, how he acted and his punishment that then left him hanging in IDFB.

I will say it out the gate- Firey has always been and will my favorite character here! 😁 Ijustneverhadanyonetotalktoabouthim...

That being said, I will say his actions are still done with reason and without. After Season 1, Firey yes didn't let Leafy on. He still is bitter.

My brother and I theorize the cast is late middle school age in BFDI, think 7th or 8th grade. So yes, you can blame puberty for their irrational thinking. Especially Leafy's action of stealing Dream Island.

You cannot tell me he has just ignored it, even after saving Leafy and seeing her being chased down. At best, he probably tried to mentally process it- him working hard and all for his one impulsive decision to cause his hard earned prize to be stolen from him.

Did anyone even ask him how he was feeling after it? Did anyone ask "Firey? Are you okay? I'm here for you, buddy."

He distanced himself from Leafy to save face, yes, but what if also because he didn't know how to process it all of BFDIA? How do you talk to someone who stole your prize after an argument? How could he verbalize or even think of how to feel after everything?

At best he was just doing the competition to feel something. At worst, he did it to win again, only to be eliminated and be disheartened.

By the time episode 25 came along, Firey may be depressed and used a mask to pretend it wasn't hurting. But 25, of course, he wants to save Leafy from the others wrath.

But the mask could only last so long and the bitterness could have used the "Protect Leafy!" mission as an excuse to finally take the farmland and claim it as his own- he wants something to show for his efforts, all that time and fear in Season 1. He rightfully won and he wanted his prize that he earned.

So he steals the farmland and is a menace. He acts out because now, he 1: has to protect Leafy from everyone and 2: it's his anger and bitterness from losing. He should have been up there or he should have something! anything! because he won.

But when cornered by Needle, he says he did it to save Leafy. Why? It would be more believable than "I won last season! It's mine! Please let me have something! Please!"

Besides, it's not like anyone had talked to him about it, did they?

So when it came time to punish him, they of course used his acrophobia on him.

To Firey, this is justice- he acted out and stole the great prize they all fought for and in exchange for his punishment, Leafy lives on.

But he still has his trauma from season one and two, not to mention, he has to be aware of what he did when he had the farmland.

This manifests in two forms while he is caged. I have drawn examples.

Warning: this is speculation on my part and I am no mental health expert, but I have felt these things before. My experience may be different and I apologize if they are not worded right.

Half the time- disassociation.

His mind is overwhelmed or mentally at its limit, so it shuts down, making him think things that either are untrue, could be true or is the truth.

Stuff like "it's my fault. This is what you deserve. Leafy is safe. You won nothing. They all hate you. You don't need a prize," ect.

Firey's mind doesn't see the buildings and height, he sees only the bars and think of his crimes and the past.

Other half: awareness and fear.

He's awakened by his surroundings or his mind coming back to reality. He sees the heights and cage around him. He freaks out.

Firey can only see the height he is out and panic and maybe cry dry tears.

Who knows if it rains in Yoyle City and if it does, does he remain dry since he is under the balcony or he gets hurt or dies? Do the other contestants give him an umbrella or let him suffer? Do they stuff him back in or wait for the rain to stop before caging Firey again?

By the time IDFB happens, it has been six months of this. Firey still has moments he screams in fear, as shown when Freesmart does their shenanigans. Yet by BFB, he acts as if nothing has happened. Either mental resilience or he chooses to lock those memories away until he gets eliminated after the diary theft and is caged in the BRB, thus reawakening them.

Come the end, he and Leafy leave to make their own version of Dream Island.

TLDR: Firey has to have trauma and it made him act up BFDIA 25 and steal the Diary in BFB. Both times, the cage time definitely was spent either mentally trying to process it or being scared before being set free. When he reconciled with Leafy and finally began to move on, more trauma came thanks to One.
