Bibbe Hansen
Bibbe Hansen, a performance artist, musician, and actress, became part of Andy Warhol’s The Factory in the mid-1960s, when she was just a teenager. The daughter of bohemian poet/actress Audrey Ostlin Hansen and artist Al Hansen, her father was part of The Factory himself, and a prominent figure in the Fluxus movement.
As a child, Bibbe performed in summer stock and also appeared in some of her father’s plays. In 1964, she formed a band called The Whippets, alongside Jan Kerouac and Charlotte Rosenthal. They recorded an album and released the single Go Go Go With Ringo. Bibbe briefly lived as a teenage runaway in New York City, and spent some time in institutions for young criminals. When she met Warhol, he suggested that they made a movie about her experiences - this resulted in Prison (1966), starring Bibbe, Edie Sedgwick, and Marie Mencken. Hanging out with the likes of Sedgwick, Gerard Malanga, and the Velvet Underground, Bibbe continued to work with Warhol, appearing in two of his screen tests and also in the films Restaurant, 10 Beautiful Girls, and 10 More Beautiful Girls.
In the late 1960s, Bibbe moved to Los Angeles, where she worked as an actress and later joined the punk rock scene. During this time, she had three children: Beck Hansen (professionally known as Beck), Channing Hansen, and Rain Whittaker; all of them are artists in their own right. In the 1990s, Bibbe operated the Troy Café in New York City, which became a popular hangout for a new generation of artists. Nowadays, Bibbe is married to Sean Castillo, continues to work as an artist, and frequently gives lectures and presentations.
