Genesis 22  The Sacrifice of Isaac

God spoke to Abraham again with a specific command to test his faithfulness. Abraham was to take the son he loved dearly to Moriah and be sacrificed as a burnt offering. Without hesitation, Abraham set off early the next day for the three day journey. Just when Abraham picked up the knife to kill his son as a sacrifice, the angel of the LORD called him to stop.  Instead God provided a ram and Abraham took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering in place of his son.  Abraham named the place Yahweh-Yireh (which means 'the LORD will provide'). The chapter ended with a list of the 12 children of Abraham's brother Nahor. One of those children, Bethuel, would become the father of Rebekah. Abraham's son Isaac will eventually marry Rebekah.

Exodus 25 Building the Tabernacle

God told Moses to tell the Israelites to bring Him their sacred offerings. God gave them a list of acceptable offerings.

God then instructed Moses to build Him a Tabernacle which would include the ark, the table, and the lampstand and its furnishings according to the pattern and dimensions God gave to Moses.

The ark was to be made of acacia wood. Moses was to put the tablets which contained the commandments inside the ark. The ark had very specific measurements. God also instructed Moses to make an atonement cover that was made of pure gold. This would have cherubim with their wings spread wide over the Ark of the Covenant. God then told Moses that He would meet with him so that He could pass on the tablets that held the commandments for the people of Israel.

The table for the sanctuary was also to be made out of acacia wood. God explained the specific plans for this table. The pitchers, plates, and bowls for offerings that were set on this table were to be made from pure gold. He also instructed Moses to keep the special bread on this table at all times.

Moses was also to make a lampstand fashioned from pure gold. This would have a base that was hammered by hand. The stand would have seven lamps on it. The trays as well as the wick trimmers were also supposed to be made of pure gold. God told Moses that he was to make everything according to the plan that the Lord had laid out.

Exodus 11  Warning of the Final Plague

God told Moses that He would strike Pharaoh one more blow and after that Pharaoh would let you leave, in fact he would force you to leave.

Moses then announced to Pharaoh that God would strike all the firstborn sons in every family in Egypt and they would die. Even the firstborn of all the livestock will die. Then Egypt would wail, a wail like no one else had heard before. But there would be peace among the Israelites. For God made a distinction between the Egyptians and the Israelites. And all the officials of Egypt would run to God and begged Him to get His people out of Egypt. Then, burning with anger, Moses left Pharaoh.

Personal lesson :

Pharaoh‘s heart hardened so many times before God. But when I consider my own situation… How often have I, like Pharaoh, ignored God, over and over again, insisting that I see things clearly and that I am right?  Father, forgive.

Genesis 21  The Birth of Isaac

God kept His promise, Sarah gave birth to a son for Abraham when he was 100 years old. They named him Isaac.  When Sarah saw Ishmael making fun of Isaac, she told Abraham to sent Ishmael and Hagar away. Sarah would not allow them any part in the inheritance with Isaac. In the desert, God heard the cry of Hagar, so He provided water for her and confirmed His promise to make Ishmael a great nation from his descendants. King Abimelech approached Abraham to make a treaty, that Abraham would not deal falsely with the King or with his offspring. The King also made an oath to give Abraham a permanent home in a place known as Beersheba. This was the beginning of Abraham’s possession of the promised land.

Exodus 34 God Renewed His Covenant with Moses

God told Moses to chisel out two tablets of stone like the first ones so that God could write on them the same words that were on the tablets Moses smashed. God promised that He would lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. He would forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin but would not excuse the guilty. God would performed miracles that they had never seen before, He would go ahead of them and drive out the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

God warned them to be very careful never to make a treaty with the people who lived in the land where they were going. If they do, they would follow their evil ways and be trapped. Instead, they must break down their pagan altars.

God also gave instructions on celebration of some festivals,  sacrificial offerings to God, the Sabbath rest.

Moses was with God in the mountain forty days and when he came down from the mountain holding the tablets, his face glowed from the glory of God. However, he did not know it was glowing. Because of this, the Israelites feared getting close to Moses.

Exodus 33

God was frustrated with the Israelites for being rebellious and stubborn. God told Moses to continue leading the people, He said He would not go with them because He might destroy them if He went with them.

Moses took the Tent of Meeting and set it up some distance from the camp. Everyone who wanted to make a request of the LORD would go to the Tent of Meeting outside the camp. Whenever Moses went out to the Tent of Meeting, they would all watch Moses until he disappeared iinside. Inside the Tent of Meeting, the LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend.

The Lord reassured Moses that He would be with him after all and He would forgive the Israelites of their stubbornness.

Moses asked God to show him His glory, but the Lord told him that He could not reveal Himself in His glory because it would destroy Moses to see it. But He did promise Moses that if he went to a cleft in a certain rock, He would be able to show Himself from behind. However, God said, no living man could see God’s face and still live.

Exodus 32 The Golden Calf

The Israelites were impatient with Moses being up on the mountain,  they wondered what had happened to him. So they asked Aaron to make them some gods to lead them.

Aaron told the people to give him their gold earings, he melted it down, and molded it into the shape of a calf. The people worshipped the calf, sacrificed burnt offerings and peace offerings. After this, they celebrated with feasting and drinking, and they indulged in pagan revelry.

On the mountain, God told Moses what was happening to the people. He was filled with anger and wanted to destroy the people for their rebellion. But He would make Moses, into a great nation. Moses pleaded with God not to destroy His people so God changed his mind about the terrible disaster he had threatened to bring on his people.

Moses turned and went down the mountain. He held in his hands the two stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant. They were inscribed on both sides, front and back. These tablets were God's work; the words on them were written by God himself. He burned with anger when he saw the calf and the dancing. took the calf they had made and burned it. Then he ground it into powder, threw it into the water, and forced the people to drink it.

Moses stood at the entrance to the camp and called those who had been loyal and obeyed God. The Levites detached from the rest of the group and they were told to kill those who were against the Lord.
