Recently, I have been asked to explain why I mark up my bible. Here is one aspect of what I consider when I approach a biblical text. When I look at a passage, I ask three questions: 1) What does it say? (Observation) 2) What does it mean? (Interpretation) 3) What does it mean for me? (Application) WHAT DOES IT SAY? (OBSERVATION) verse 1: The character of God - God is a refuge for the nation of Israel - God is strength for the nation of Israel - God is present with the nation of Israel - God is a help to the nation of Israel verse 2a: Israel's response to the character of God - Israel will not be afraid during their current trouble - (implied with the word "therefore") Israel will trust God during their current trouble verse 2b-3: The reality of trouble for the nation of Israel - The earth will fail - The mountains will move - The seas will roar - The earth will tremble WHAT DOES IT MEAN? (INTERPRETATION) 1. God will be present to the nation of Israel to help them by being a source of strength and a refuge of safety. 2. The nation of Israel does not need to fear the present trouble, because God can be trusted to provide all that they need during their time of crisis. 3. The trouble that faces the nation of Israel may be globally catastrophic (landslides, volcanoes, tsunamis, and earthquakes), and/or it is metaphorically using these obviously disastrous terms to explain how they are feeling because of current attacks from other nations, or even from personal or collective sin and struggles. Nonetheless, the trouble is real and threatening. WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR ME? (APPLICATION) I do not need to fear the trouble that life will bring my way because I can trust God to supply everything I need through His presence in my life.
