Film Supplies

I accidentally passed by the BIC Camera Nagoya JR Gate Tower Store and it was film roll heaven… I just got 2 rolls and immediately got out of there. I’ll run out of money if I stayed longer. Haha!

Japan has all the film supplies that you can ever ask for.

march 24: SIM card updates + 明治神宮

I’ve had this post saved in my drafts for the longest time, but I never had the time to finish it. Please bear with me as I slowly roll out some updates!

Today was when there was finally an English speaker at Bic Camera who could assist us with our SIM cards! Yay, we can finally have data to navigate around the city! 

Just a side note: Tokyo doesn’t really have street names labeled clearly like NYC, so it’s actually quite hard to get around if you are unfamiliar with the area. Google Maps is a lifesaver as a foreigner! If I could add one more thing to Google Maps, it would be the Exit Number that I should get out from that station. Some stations like Shinjuku have many maaaaany exits, so it’s quite tricky to get out of the right one. But since I am here for a while, I think I will start to recognize which exits are the better routes for where I want to go to! The station also usually has maps you can use & it labels the more popular tourist destinations on the side so you can see which exit is closer to where you want to go.

Back to Bic Camera~ If you plan to study abroad in Tokyo, I highly recommend you to just wait it out the first few days without data until you get your address registered onto your Residence Card. It is so much cheaper compared to the online SIM cards that you see catered to foreigners before you come to Japan. But of course, it will be kind of inconvenient the first few days, so if you rather have data once you land in Tokyo, you should just go with whatever you find. I would also like to note that if you receive any scholarships that require a phone number for receiving calls, you need to have your address registered on your Residence Card before you can get the SIM Card for it. If you just want a data plan, I believe services like Sakura Mobile just need you to have your Residence Card.

Now that the housekeeping stuff is over, we made a spontaneous trip to Meiji Jingu~ It felt kind of surreal going to it Meiji Jingu and using the 手水 because I have always seen it in pictures and Youtube videos, but now I am actually paying a visit!

The classic sake area that every tourist takes a picture of ~ There was also wine straight across from it, but it didn’t get as much attention as the sake! Haha

Here is the 絵馬 (えま), where you can write your wishes that will be conveyed to the priests during the Morning Ceremony~ Since this was a very spontaneous trip to the shrine, it was actually closing shortly after we arrived! I will definitely make a second visit when I have some time!

There was a free J-Pop concert at Tower Records in Shibuya that my friend wanted to see, so we paid a visit. I think this was the first time I experienced culture shock in Japan!!! Haha. The whole floor was filled with men as a girl group was performing on stage. The men were so enthusiastic. Not only were they cheering for the girls in unison, but they were also hopping onto each other and jumping as high as they could so they can get the girls on stage to notice them... I never saw men this enthusiastic before!!! .. And we left after 2-3 songs because the songs were not our cup of tea!

We went to a Chinese-style restaurant for dinner in Shibuya! But it was a struggle because many places were full. 

This was around 675 yen~ It was essentially fried rice with crab haha. Pretty decent meal for that price.

Warning: there were lots of hustlers on the streets at night who kept telling us to go to their restaurants!!! It was getting me really frustrated because I read on travel safety websites that sometimes these hustlers get you to go to their restaurants and the prices they charge are a lot higher than what was expected. So please do your research before you naively follow these guys!!
