Turns out, there is a legend that it was invented over 500 years ago. The city Linz lost their right to the customs for shipments on the Rhine - important income for them - to the city Andernach. The people of Linz got angry - not at the emperor actually responsible - but at Andernach. They decided to attack during the night. Two young baker boys were still up to get some honey from atop the city wall where the night watchman had sat up his beehives. The boys noticed the attackers and threw the beehives at them, resulting in them getting stung and fleeing. The boys were heralded as heroes and in celebration a cake was invented and named after the incident - Bienenstich.

»German Bee Sting Cake« 🐝✨ One of my favourite (if not the favourite) to make, but one of my least favourite to eat: German Bee Sting Cake (Bienenstich). Luckily both my dad and my sister love it & also say that mine’s the best soo... 😇🙃
