Do you have an "alternate model for personality disorders" post for HPD? If not, would you be able to make one? I'm really glad to have a resource like this since I've been questioning a few PDs, and HPD is one that's been on my radar for a while!

the alternate models come from the DSM, and it doesn't include HPD - it would be diagnosed as PD-TS (Trait Specified) in this model.

if i had to guess at a HPD alternate model:

like all alternate model PDs, it would include impairments in identity, self-direction, empathy & intimacy.

HPD's examples might look like:

identity: unclear boundaries between self & others, unstable self-image & self-esteem, inability to regulate emotions

self-direction: incoherent short & long-term goals, unstable internal standards of social behaviour

empathy: difficulties understanding others' experiences, and their effects on others

intimacy: unstable connection (and desire for) with others, unbalanced mutuality in connections

in the Five Factor Model part, HPD might also be described as being high in Negative Affectivity (e.g. mood instability & intensity, insecurity, etc.) and Disinhibition (e.g. impulsivity, risk taking, etc.)

you could also check out the ICD-11's personality disorder diagnosis (just one disorder with various traits)

I was reading your post about trait specific personality disorder. And the way its like - a vs b - as in ideal and dysfunctional. And two of them stood out to me, extraversion and agreeablesness, as ideal. I feel like thered be a level at which both of them would be dysfunctional themselves...?

For example someone that always defers?

I was somewhat surprised to see it as two ends of the same continuum... i guess i was expecting it to be like, the middle is the ideal and the two ends of the line being both - in different ways - dysfunctional.

so this model uses traits from the Big Five Factor Model. Agreeableness, in this context, refers to “prosocial behaviour”, and Extraversion “relates to the approach of the individual to the social and material world in an energetic manner” (source) - i.e., Agreeableness = being friendly, compassionate vs Antagonism = being critical, unempathetic; Extraversion = being outgoing, energetic vs Detachment = avoiding people/relationships, being withdrawn

the wikipedia article explains it pretty well! it’s not about literal agreeing, or being totally over the top wrt extraversion. but yeah, they probably could’ve clarified it more (they do in the DSM-5, but i cant link that because you’ll need institutional access to see it and i don’t want to doxx myself!)
