Wizard Rock EP of the Month Club review: Big Whompy “Treestylin’” September 2008

So everyone knows The Whomping Willows... well, everyone in wizard rock anyways. We all also know that the band pretty much exists because the Whomping Willow takes over the body of Matt Maggiacomo (he of the former The Jena Campaign fame) or something like that. Then, interestingly enough, wrock fans who bought the initial Jingle Spells release learned something new - The Whomping Willow had a rap side project called Big Whompy. I like to imagine it's basically the tree with a giant Kangol hat on and unlaced white Adidas sneakers on two of his roots. To everyone's great delight (OK maybe that's a stretch) Big Whompy released an EP in September 2008 as part of the EP of the Month Club. Treestylin' arrived in everyone's mailboxes, with a cover adorned with dolla, dolla bills y'all and some funky beats & masterful rhymes (OK maybe that's a stretch too). The EP kicked off with "What Up, Hogwartz?", a tune that sounds like the bastard son of "License to Ill" and "Raising Hell". Big Whompy lays out the story of his time at Hogwarts.... er, Hogwartz with some help from Dumbledore and a seriously overworked scratch DJ. Big Whompy lets us know he loves the environment and early 90's TV shows as his introduction to wrock fans who may not be familiar from his Christmas jam. "Whompy iz a Gangsta" features a doubled vocal track over an old school 808 drum track, and we once again learn how proud he is of his Ford Focus's gas mileage, and he even drops word that Hogwarts has sororities. Don't remember those in the novels. He also name checks that punk Davey Gudgeon, which is honestly the highlight of the song, if not the entire EP. The Phat Friar gets some guest vocals on this tune as well. The third track "Covah Yr Junk" was probably the most well known tune on this EP thanks to a sweet video animated by Doug MacDonald (aka Catchlove), which you can see below. The song's basically about Whompy telling JFF to keep himself covered up around that pervy ghost Moaning Myrtle in the Prefect's bathroom. Some of the lines are a bit prophetic about a future Whompy/Myrtle relationship if you ask me, and if you've never heard the tune, check it below.

"My Kriminul Rekrd" wrecked my spellcheck and it tells the story of Whompy's...  criminal record. Which he apparently keeps in his pants. There's a couple of funny lines in the song, but to be honest that's all it has going for it. The last song on the EP "Slack Attack" is basically a hype track for Andrew Slack, founder of the HPA. Lil' Whompy drops some bombs towards the end of the tune as well. The EP was a fun diversion from Matt's usual output, and I like that he approached things much like the Malfoys did in 2007. He took advantage of the uniqueness of the releases and did something outside of his norm. Unfortunately, in my opinion it's a bit uneven as a release; the first three tracks range from "OK" to "pretty decent" but the last two tracks just feel tacked on. In the long run, that's not a huge criticism by any means, as Matt was well outside of his comfort zone and he released something that I'm sure a lot of wrock fans still enjoy. But you can't put this EP alongside the 2009 releases that are rap-centric, that's for sure. It’s a fun novelty, but not much more than that. Bottom line - fun for a few listens, "Covah Yr Junk" is still an awesome vid, but Whompy’s regular ego (as opposed to his alter ego) has nothing to fear.
