SOUL LOW CONCLUDES: THE BIG BING WINTER TOUR 2016
Greetings Soul Nation!
After surviving a week in the barren wastes of the Rust Belt, I can confidently say that civilization not only survives in subzero temperatures but thrives, particularly in the dimly lit basements and hospitable homes of those who love music. Life finds a way, and when all is said and done Life may even cook you breakfast and buy some merch. Yes, Facebook reminded us, like the know-it-all nerd on the playground you’d like to nuggie, that exactly a year ago we were enjoying the warmth and sunshine of Austin and LA. But we found a kindred warmth from friends and hosts, both old and new: Jared in Kalamazoo, Jake’s Aunt and Uncle in Fort Wayne, Paul in Cincinnati, Sandeep in Columbus, Jackson in Pittsburg, Nick and the fam in Cleveland, Ben and Ian in Rock Island, and all the rest of you lovable rascals, you know who you are.
Yes, I may have had waaayyy too many tequila shots in Jake’s uncle’s basement while learning to play Rummy, and performing OMG STD on the pulpit of a church after-hours to a gaggle of exuberant high schoolers may have been somewhat blasphemous, but we also saw an amazing studio stacked floor-to-ceiling with vintage amps and analogue recording equipment (where we just might record a new EP, no Spoilers), tried Steak & Shake and Kimchi for the first time, gushed over Milo with new friend Malachi, snuck our 17-year-old buddies from The Cantaloupes into an 18+ festival, and all-in-all had a wonderful time exploring our own Midwestern Backyard. We’re already planning our return, this time with warmer temperatures on our side.
What was truly a blessing, however, was coming home to play at one of our favorite venues with nine other fantastic Milwaukee bands at Milwaukee Record’s Local Coverage, each band willing to step way out of their comfort zones to cover one another with deft grace. We had a great time performing the music of Tigernite and mingling with the best Ol’Miltown has to offer. But the most surreal and wonderful honor was to have local legends Decibully, who we listened to in high school, covering our music at the end of the night. It quite literally brought us to tears.
Much love and till next time,
Soul Guy Sean
