“Where is Duke Lion? He’s Dead...” by Big Dumb Face October 2017 “I really approached it like it’s a Hanna-Barbera [animation] or He-Man, like it’s a silly fantasy cartoon. People who liked the first record will find out that the ‘Blood Red Head on Fire’ [a single from the first album] is actually Duke Lion’s head sent back in time so he fights himself in a time loop forever. It’s ridiculous, man! (Laughs) I’m a big Harry Belafonte fan, which is an influence on some of the record. It’s a heavy record that doesn’t take itself too seriously.” - Wes Borland Wes is probably the guy who got me to start playing music and take painting seriously. His influence on me is pretty immeasurable. His first record not as the guitar player of Limp Bizkit was the first Big Dumb Face record “Duke Lion Fight’s the Terror”. When it first came out it was so different from what he was doing with Limp Bizkit, I fell in love instantly, It was like Ween mixed with Gwar, two bands I hadn’t quite discovered yet since it was merely 2001 and I was just a boy. I remember sitting in my friend’s basement and we just sat there listening to it, soaking in the lyrics, basking in the strange world he had created with the music and art in the CD booklet. It become a record I would show to many close friends, one of those “if you understand this album you understand me better” sort of things. I never thought he would make another Big Dumb Face record. Then, in 2017 I was pleasantly surprised to find he was working on new material. He released it on Halloween that year and since then it has become my go to October album. It’s darker, heavier, and more “tropical” than the first album. It is also more unpleasant, the lyrics more indecipherable, and generally more rough than most albums you might listen to. It’s also, hilarious, creative, and bizarre. I’m so happy he decided to return to this project. Once again, if you understand this record, you understand me better.
