Do you have any words for people who bring in animals they find off the street that ultimately don't make it? I feel that can be a very discouraging situation
Having had something similar happen myself (a cat that was dumped by a neighbor when they moved, he was a skeleton, turned out to have bad lung cancer a week later), this is what I say, and was said to me when my work called to let me know they had euthanised Amigo-
At the very least, this animal was warm, dry, and had the opportunity to eat and drink. It had a nice, soft bed. It was safe from predators and mean humans. Nothing could save them in the end, but that end would have been a lot worse outside. We tried, which is important, and we said goodbye gently, which is important. A quick, gentle end is the last, best, gift we can give any animal.
As an aspiring veterinary nurse I can't believe I've never thought about this before: How do you prevent potentially taking something nasty you've been exposed to at work home to your pets or fosters and vice-versa? I'm looking to get my foot in the door working other jobs with animals and I want to make sure I don't become a disease vector for the animals as well as for humans.
vet-and-wild here.
Biosecurity! Wear proper PPE for potentially infectious cases (i.e. puppies with diarrhea, coughing animals, etc). Wash your hands thoroughly, particularly when you’re done for the day. It’s also not a bad idea to have separate shoes that you either leave at the clinic or in your car so you don’t bring them into your house. If you potentially were exposed to something really bad you may even want to change out of your clothes before you enter the house. Keep a spare set of clothes at work or in your car, or easy access to grab as soon as you get home.
As for your pets, make sure they’re up to date on all vaccines and preventatives.
You live in Canada, right? Do you have any advice or resources on keeping adventure cats warm on colder excursions? Both of mine insist on going out even when it's snowy, but one has relatively thin fur and stays huddled up on a towel against the house for pretty much the entire time.
Your best bet is to keep outside walks short in cold weather so the cats don’t get too cold! Instead of doing one long walk a day, maybe split that time up into two or three short walks. Sweaters can be very useful if your cat will wear them. Most dog sweaters don’t fit cats very well, but they’re better than nothing.
If you’re leaving the property, bring a backpack or tote bag with a blanket that your cat can climb into when they need a break from the cold. If you’re at home, you can do the same by keeping a carrier or covered cat bed nearby. A microwaveable heat pack or something similar wrapped in a blanket and put into the bag/carrier can keep your kitty toasty too. Just be sure it isn’t hot enough to burn your cat.
Encourage your cat to walk on dirt and grass when possible, as it’s not as cold or hard on their pads as ice and snow. If they’re walking on ice, keep an eye on their paws, especially if the ice is melting. Wet pads on freezing ice can tear the pads and cause bleeding.
Also sorry for the dead-of-night rebranding. My sense of identity is in turmoil right now (obvs) and of course one of the best URLs I've ever had on here included a gender identity that whatever imp living inside me flipping the switches on who I am suddenly decided no longer accurately describes me. Couldn't sleep without doing something about it.

Turkish Angoras?
I haven’t interacted with enough to form any real opinions.
You gotta watch Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, it's so good!!
hmmmmmmm,,,,, i do need a new show,,,, i shall keep it in mind! Currently I’m doing my yearly rewatch of West Wing because i need some good vibes lol
Thots on Nora this episode
overall i think it was pretty good i just wish maybe this had some earlier instead of going 7 years with her not having a character but ya know. still hope we’re revisiting the whole very obviously not from mistral orphan girl thing but i think her conversation with blake and weiss was pretty solid. as much as ren simps like to pretend hes her accessory bc theyre misogynists who get mad when she decided to think for herself she really was just absolutely nothing on her own for 7 years of the shows run so. congrats on making that work. i guess.
the scars look kinda dumb tho
