#2919 - Marah fabacea - California Manroot

At least, most likely that species, hybrids between California Manroot and the other Marah species found in that state are common. Also known as Bigroot, which it undoubtedly deserves - the tuber of this vine can be meters long and weigh over 100kg. Marah comes from Hebrew, and refers to the bitter taste of all parts of the plant.

The root contains large amounts of saponins, and has been used for soap-like purposes, and to poison fish. Despite the taste, saponins, irritating and vomit-inducing fluid and spikes of the fruit, collected for food - the foliage is apparently edible. i can't imagine it would be particularly appealing.
