synopsis: when Benny left, you were broken. It wasn't until he came back you had it all again.

Your smile was fooling more people than you thought it would.

At first, it wasn't. Your close friends would always question how content you were, knowing you well enough not to be truly tricked. They eventually stopped asking, presuming that by now you would have gotten over it, but how could you? You were nothing without Benny.

On the surface, you had it all. Raised always to flash a smile when you paid the pricy bills. The ones that most people in this area of Chicago didn't even know were achievable. You moved around with precision and purpose, never delaying or slouching. Your hair was teased and maintained with delicacy, the same as your nails and makeup. You projected perfection with the glitter specks in your perfume finishing it off like a final coat of paint. Safe to say Benny Cross had never seen a woman like you outside of movies, and you had definitely never seen a man like Benny.

You two had clicked, instantly. The one time you even dared to step foot in a place as run-down as this bar, not out of choice- your friend was just dying for the powder room, he was there. The dim lightbulb highlighted his strong features and his arms looked strong enough to collapse the pool table he was leaning on- and it's fair to say you had never wanted to be an inanimate object more than this damned table. His eyes sparkled as they met yours and his stride was confident as he walked over, his voice was deep as he offered to get you a drink, sounding disappointed when you eventually remembered about your friend. Even as the said friend was impatiently tapping her heels against the floor, you couldn't seem to pull away.

Ever since that night, you couldn't get enough. The idea of you even touching a motorcycle was once unimaginable, now you chased the thrill of your arms around his waist as he flew through stop signs and red lights. Your neighbours are still not fond of the roar that echoed down the road when he drew near, but ever since his move, they have had to grow to accept it, like many people in your life have.

No one was keen on your new relationship, words of distaste muttered between sips of expensive champaign at every function you dragged him along to. Not that his friends were open to you either. Your prissy, spoiled exterior fooled them into believing that's just who you are. They came around quicker when Benny got you out of your shell, just like how you were with him.

You two were often together, only parting ways to visit friends and have some breathing room, though that never lasted long. Even an hour apart would lead to passionate kisses and rough touches. It doesn't mean you two didn't have hard times.

Petty arguments were common, rising from nothing but blowing into something. They could get firey and hurtful, yet you both always got over it. This didn't stop Benny from talking about leaving.

"It would be so much easier on you, I could just ride someplace and you could go on with your life just how you were supposed to." His voice was soft like he believed it. The cheap smoke clouded the air and his fingers circled your hip gently. You would instantly stop him from saying such things, explaining that you didn't know how life would go on without him.

Maybe that is why it stung even more when he did leave.

You expected it, deep down. You knew this was coming, his threats were becoming even more frequent and so were the fights. Yet here you were, all alone.

The summer nights were long and so were the barbeques, pool parties and beach visits. Your friends kept you busy, the surface-level smile was real, but it couldn't grow any bigger without your chest tightening and tears welling in your eyes. You wished you could ride in on the back of his bike, that he was here next to you with a beer in his hand and that he could have an arm around you as the breeze grew. You wished that he was here like he should be.

It only took a few months for him to return, a guilty expression and a long explanation ready. You didn't care, all you wanted was his bike parked outside and his boots by the front door. You were whole again, grateful to have him back.
