It’s #EarthDay today! 💚🌎💚 It takes just one small act to make a difference. If we all bring a reusable bag to the grocery store, that’s a whole lot of plastic that won’t end up in our seas. ♻️ Imagine if we plant one tree at time, we could eventually end up with a forest 🌳🌳🌳 This photo was from a recent trip to the island of Bohol in the Philippines, taken at the man-made mahogany forest in Loboc. This beautiful 2-km forest is part of a reforestation project to address the devastating effects of deforestation due to “kaingin,” which is slash-and-burn farming, a traditional method widely used in many parts of the world, including the Philippines. What’s striking about this forest is that it is eerily quiet, no birds, no insects, no tarsiers roam here. Why? Because in deciding which tree species to plant as part of their reforestation project 50 years ago, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) selected mahogany, which is a non-native species to the Philippines 🌴 The good thing is that folks have learned from this experience and there are a number of “rainforestation” initiatives such as those led by @uplbofficial @earthdaynetwork @forestfoundationph and others.
