Ok but let's talk about how Bilbo never really quite fit in the Shire. How he loves it and it's home, but he's by himself, sitting within his garden and it's pretty clear before the dwarves set up that this is normal. He's a hermited shut in who probably is never really fully comfortable around the hobbits. Because he's a bit too clever and sharp-witted and sarcastic for his own good. Because he was raised wild by a bright Took of a mother and then grew into all the expectations of being a Baggins of Bag end. And as that responsibility and social standing sets in he withdraws. He never manages to get rid of his sarcasm or sharp tongue but he learns to hide it. To keep his thoughts behind forced, polite small talk but he's still jumpy and awkward and if something falls outside his script he starts stammering and the temper gets harder and harder to hold. Let's talk about how he made himself stop pretending to go on adventures, how he told himself that stories were really all he wanted, all he needed. How a few times he probably started talking too much about some great ancient tale he's been reading, and he could see others fidgeting and uncomfortable. So that's another part he kept down. Let's talk about when he was on the road, drenched and cold and terrified, he had never felt more like Bilbo Baggins and less like Mister Baggins in his life.
I have a mighty need to draw Hobbit fanart, but I have no access to my tablet. Errrg..
