I honestly believe that Bilbo would never have returned to the Shire had Thorin survived. Especially movie!Bilbo. He may have gone back to get some personal things–though maybe not because this adventure was really about how material items aren’t important!–but he would have stayed in Erebor. Or at least adventured elsewhere! He didn’t belong in the Shire and he wouldn’t have gone back there to live indefinitely.
His not-belonging in the Shire is even more obvious when you find out in FotR that Bilbo had lots of admirers but no actual friends until Frodo came along. That’s right. He wasn’t just ‘Mad Baggins.’ I mean he was, but there were plenty of Hobbits that did want to befriend Bilbo. But it was a no-go for Bilbo. He was the one that didn’t feel like he belonged.
Yet despite all that, Bilbo goes back to the Shire. Why?? Thorin wasn’t his ONLY friend– he had many, if not all, of the other Company members as friends. He wouldn’t have been alone or unwelcome in Erebor. Even Bard and Thranduil would have welcomed Bilbo. But don’t forget Thorin’s last words in the film: “Go back to your books and your armchair, plant your trees, watch them grow…”
AND WHAT DOES BILBO DO? THAT! He does that. Because they were Thorin’s last words and (especially during that time period/in literary mythology) you follow the instructions of a dying person’s last wishes. And of course this wasn’t the dying wish of just anyone, but Thorin. His friend.
