Bill 24 — legislation to end a private ambulance strike — passed late Monday night after hours of debate in the House of Assembly.

The bill's passing means more than 100 ambulance workers who were on strike since Friday across Newfoundland are going back to work immediately. The bill has not yet received royal assent, which will turn it into law; that's expected to happen sometime on Tuesday.

The bill was introduced at an emergency sitting of the House of Assembly on Monday morning, on the fourth day of a private ambulance strike affecting paramedics and emergency medical responders across a wide area of the island. [...]

But despite the NDP's rejections, the intent of the legislation has been welcomed by the union.

Hubert Dawe, who led the negotiations for Teamsters Local 855, wanted to see legislation that will establish the union's members as essential workers and set clear timelines for when a labour matter is sent to arbitration. He said he also wanted to see it include penalties in the event either side hinders the process.

Around noon, Dawe told reporters, the union told Fewer's Ambulance Service it was willing to return to emergency services at 4 p.m. "as a gesture of good faith." [...]

Bill to shield LGBTQ students from early outing passes in legislature

Eggen said passage of the bill means all students will have a safe sanctuary.

Bill 24, which prevents teachers from outing students who join a gay straight alliance in school, passed in the Alberta legislature Wednesday.

The bill, an Act to Support Gay-Straight Alliances, passed easily with 42 MLAs voting in favor. The only MLAs who voted against the bill were the 23 United Conservative Party members in the house at the time.

The vote capped two weeks of emotional debate over the rights of students, the role of teachers and the authority of parents.

Bill 24 support rally draws hundreds to the McDougall Centre in Calgary

Earlier this year, before becoming leader of the United Conservative Party, Jason Kenney said parents should be notified if their child joins a GSA, unless that puts them at risk.

More than 200 people gathered in front of the McDougall Centre in Calgary on Sunday to show support for Bill 24.

If passed, it will ensure students who join a gay-straight alliances (GSA) in an Alberta school are not outed to their parents by teachers or staff.

Graham Thomson: Alberta Teachers' Association says Bill 24 protects teachers as well as students

“We are quite pleased with Bill 24,” said Jeffery. “It makes life a little easier on a teacher because certainly there’s situations where outside pressures to disclose could be applied to a particular sponsoring teacher.”

The Alberta Teachers’ Association would like to talk to Jason Kenney.

The 46,000-member association, which represents the vast majority of teachers in the province, wants the leader of the United Conservative Party to know it backs Bill 24, an Act to Support Gay-Straight Alliances.

The ATA also doesn’t appreciate Kenney trying to put teachers in a position where they would be responsible for potentially divulging a student’s sexual identity to his or her parents without the student’s consent.

ATA president Greg Jeffery said he’s been trying to arrange a meeting with Kenney to talk about education issues. But Kenney just doesn’t pick up.

After the Alberta election votes were counted on Tuesday night, many members of the LGBTQ community said they were grieving and feeling disappointed. Many said it felt like a rejection from the province.

LGBTQ advocate and Calgarian Pam Rocker said she’s unsure of what the future holds with the UCP majority win.

I rarely make political comments online. I prefer to not wade into that potential pit of blood and rusty nails... for the most part, especially when there are many people with much more power, situational knowledge, and eloquent command of the written language than I. However, there is a local issue that has risen up again, and I'm not seeing anyone putting similar thoughts as my own toward the subject.

So I will say it.

Bill 24 does not outlaw you having a conversation with your child about sexuality, gender identity, or LGBTQIA rights like a responsible parent. Bill 24 is not about 'the government deciding they know better than the parents.' What Bill 24 does is allow children the option of joining a space of peers where they can ask questions, get answers, support one another, and not have to worry about the repercussions of being outed to their family if they are not ready to choose to do so themselves.

If you have created a relationship with your child where they do not feel safe in talking about sexuality, gender identity, or LGBTQIA rights with you, then that is YOUR problem.
