Political rant incoming:
I fear the Alberta NDP are failing to capture the moment, instead of focusing on tangible policies they're falling for the dumbest ploy the UCP could come up with and coming after Danielle Smith over separation. Meanwhile there is a genuine affordability crisis they could be addressing with things like increased funding to public transit, increasing taxes on the extremely wealthy (of whom we have a great many), creating public housing, increasing minimum wage, strengthening unions, etc.
I went to the NDP caucus stampede breakfast yesterday and I was filled with disappointment, not a single person approached my table to talk about the party or its policies. I saw no push for fundraising, I didn't see Nenshi at all, despite Calgary being his base. Truly, if I was involved in that party I'd be whipping those assholes into shape and demanding they actually make an effort for once.
With the election coming up in the fall this was a crucial moment for them to really create a sense of momentum, but they squandered it entirely. Like where are your volunteers? Why was I subscribed to your emails for a full year and got hundreds of emails about donating but not a single one about volunteering my time? They NEED boots on the ground, they NEED people who will engage with people, especially at an event like that where you have people primed to listen/share.
Also, other minor gripe, no one had name tags? Like I recognize Janis Irwin because she posts on tiktok and is outspoken, but I couldn't pick anyone else except Nenshi out of the crowd (and he was not there when I was). Everyone who is running for a seat in the fall and everyone with a seat needed to have name tags and be mingling right from the moment the breakfast began to the very end, they're politicians, it's literally like 80% of their job.
(also they just had pancakes and eggs, like no sausage or bacon???? Wtf guys?)
The Alberta NDP leader on greater visibility and listening to small-town voters.
The Alberta NDP’s path to success in a general election that’s still three years away places a new emphasis on small-town Alberta, says leader Naheed Nenshi. “I think it’s fair to say that in the past, Alberta’s New Democrats have not been as visible as we should be outside of Calgary and Edmonton. So we have to show up in cities like Red Deer and Lethbridge and Medicine Hat and Grande Prairie and Fort McMurray more than we have,” Nenshi said in a recent interview. “We also need to show up in smaller communities and in truly rural areas, and really help folks see what our offer is.” Nenshi said the 87-riding strategy is introducing him to well-prepared NDP volunteers who give him confidence in the party’s future. “We’ve got wonderful people who’ve been working for us and wonderful people who will run for us all over the province.” The former three-term Calgary mayor said he’s warmly greeted at events like the Ponoka Stampede in central Alberta. An NDP resurgence is evident in constituencies like Highwood, immediately south of Calgary, which boasts a top-five NDP membership total, Nenshi said.

In a letter to Brian Jean, environment critic Jodi Calahoo Stonehouse says he should tell the Alberta Energy Regulator to reject application
Alberta’s New Democrat Opposition is asking the provincial government to step in and quash applications for coal mining exploration in the Rocky Mountains. In a letter to Energy Minister Brian Jean, environment critic Jodi Calahoo Stonehouse says he should tell the Alberta Energy Regulator to reject applications from Northback Holdings for drilling and water use. Last week, Northback applied to the regulator to revive the Grassy Mountain project, which was denied by a joint federal-provincial review panel in 2021.

Honestly just a rant, while I am currently in a "professional" writing course I know this blog ain't that, just some thoughts, feelings, obs
My newest blog, have a read
Well, at least Edmonton's a solid orange. :/
I'd like to say that I can't believe people voted for the UCP after all their bs, but tbh I'm not surprised.
Just disappointed.
Whatever you do, don't vote blue.
As one of my Grade 5 students so eloquently and aptly put it:
"Smith worries me, and I don't trust her. She's been recorded multiple times saying 'Should the government really have to cover 100% of the cost of a doctor's visit?'. Which is like, yeah. Because some people can't afford to pay and if you don't go to the doctor you die."
Healthcare isn't a luxury and it's not optional.
It's literally listed as a right in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which we have ratified.
