[LINK IN BIO] Bill Daniel’s moniker zine from 1989. Bill sent this to someone who wrote to him, in response to a zine review in Factsheet Five. The guy wrote back and said, “You must know buZ blurr,” who does the Colossus of Roads moniker. Bill wrote him back to inquire, since he had not yet met any of the moniker writers he was searching for. The guy sent Bill a letter back, with buZ’s mailing address. Bill connected with buZ and that’s how “Who is Bozo Texino?” began. This new issue has a full interview with Bill, a personal hero of mine since 1992, when I read his article “Who is Bozo Texino?” in Cometbus issue 27. So yes, it’s truly an honor to have him in issue 18. We talked about zines, Aaron Cometbus, buZ blurr and monikers, among other things. Susan A. Phillips—also interviewed in Fluke 18–had this (and more) to say about Bill: “Bill is genius-level smart. His work has been central to the formation of this entire freight train moniker world, fandom and all. He’s basically a cult figure in the world of moniker writing. He carries a lot of respect in the art world in general. His Bozo Texino film really put him on the map. Unknown Arkansas: when I was 20 years old in 1992, a couple of friends and I were reading Cometbus issue 27 while hanging out by the tracks back home in Little Rock. We came across an article titled “Who is Bozo Texino?” written by one Bill Daniel. In this article revealed what he called “hobo graffiti,” on the rail cars across America. Names such as Bozo Texino. Herby. The Rambler. Bird Dog. Gypsy Sphinx. And Colossus of Roads. My friends and I walked the tracks to the old boxcars down the line and there they all were, in real life. I’ll never forget the feeling I had, as if we discovered something truly underground that most people know nothing about. That feeling has never left me. Here’s a photo I took of buZ blurr, at his farm in Surrealville, Arkansas last November. For the uninitiated. I’ll let you do your homework on who he is. To me, he is a living legend and a friend. An inspiration to the blue collar and the artist alike. This is one of the photos featured in Splendid Feast photo and art show in Long Beach this Saturday (buZ and Bill are also in it)!
