As if ‘It’ hadn’t traumatized my specifically phobic ass enough, Billy ‘Bloody Bill’ Pon had to come along and drop the at times hilarious, often nauseating and frequently lock-your-doors disturbing Circus of the Dead.

From nightmare fuel….
…to ‘oh fuck me’ fuel
Synopsis
Circus of the Dead centers around a travelling troupe of clowns led by super perv Papa Corn (played by the horrifyingly talented Bill Oberst Jr) who seem to roam the nation picking targets to fit their bizarre playing card game (“Its like Mexican Bingo”), and all their bizarre fetishes. Though, mostly Papa Corns.
Once Papa has picked his targets for the nights revelry, the unfolding brutal massacre is THE MOST fucked up I’ve seen on film in…possibly ever. Its the casual approach that gives it the most impact, as if these incredibly disgusting, disturbing, and generally horrifying acts against fellow man are nothing, just another Tuesday. If you’ve a weak stomach, anything past minute 30 is going to be rough for you.
NO SPOILERS HERE, but the nearly 2 hour run time will fly by – with good reason. Papa Corn has a very specific plan for our main man.
Conclusions
Beyond that though, I was completely unprepared for what was to follow. As I often do, when I first heard about Circus of the Dead (through our good friend Brad Potts, who plays Trooper Weaver in the film) I decided that I wanted to know as little as I could before reviewing – it makes for a more genuine reaction and review. After talking more with those involved (Chanel Ryan, who plays Tiffany Johnson) my excitement began to grow…but within the first 15 minutes I was already making creamed corn in my drawers, hooting and hollering like a damn ape – I don’t think anything could have prepared me.
Heeeeeere’s PAPA! ‘s cock.
You gotta love it when a film elicits an emotional response from the viewer. As soon as Tiffany and cop T.C. began hooking up my girlfriend shouted at the top of her lungs “SLUT! Fuckin SLUT! I know he’s a shit husband but that doesn’t give her the right!! Nice bra but SLUT!”
Can we talk about Papa Corn for a moment, and Bill Oberst Jr.’s fucking HAUNTING performance? Homicidal serial rapist extraordinaire, Papa can be oddly quiet, well spoken, vaguely feminine and even gentle – and yet, at the drop of a hat (or in this case a pair of panties) he flips to blind sexual rage with a ferocity that is fucking. frightening.
And it really is Papa here that steals the show. While there are many stellar performances throughout (Chanel Ryan, Brad Potts i’m lookin at YOU!) Bill Oberst Jr proves once and for all that he is a consummate character actor. While the subject matter may be downright appalling – by the way, Billy Pon, thanks ever so much for questioning my sanity because I fucking loved this movie – you’ll find yourself thoroughly engrossed, and eagerly awaiting the next, assuredly epic, scene.
TL;DR 9/10 – Never has a movie so thoroughly bothered me, aroused me, disturbed me, and made me scream ‘WHAT the F’ as Circus of the Dead has. And I had a smile on my face the whole time.

Circus of the Dead (2014) As if 'It' hadn't traumatized my specifically phobic ass enough, Billy 'Bloody Bill' Pon had to come along and drop the at times hilarious, often nauseating and frequently lock-your-doors disturbing Circus of the Dead.
When the film announcements were revealed for this years Texas Frightmare Weekend we were ecstatic. Not to take away from any of the films that were on display but there were two in particular we were excited for. One of those films is the dastardly gore filled epic from director Billy Pon, CIRCUS OF THE DEAD. Filled with on screen carnage to the amounts of which any gorehound would appreciate COTD raises the bar on hellacious acts performed by one of the scariest enigmas known to man. The clown.
Movies like CIRCUS OF THE DEAD are the reason we started this website. There is a possibility that this film may never see the daylights of the mainstream dynamic and oh do we feel sorry for them. Bill Oberst Jr. is brilliant as the charismatic hornball leader of the clan known as Papa Corn. For an actor with the reach and magnitude of Oberst this may be his finest villain to date. It’s almost charming how sinister Papa can be with his “Burger Boy” curl at the top of his head. It was truly a pleasure to watch him work on screen, but we would expect nothing less from Bill.

The story has a unique set up as there is nothing clearly defined. Best way to describe it is when these clowns have you in your sites your f**ked. No man, woman, child or beast can escape the wrath of these killer clowns who when together become a death metal band of destruction on any victims in their midst. Pon has given us a new family to love and add to the sadistic groups of deranged beings we can’t get enough of. Move over Firefly and Sawyer Clan, Papa Corn and his band of misfits are here to stay and here to kill. We have a brewing cult classic here and that classic is Circus of The Dead.
We heard down at TFW that some people were not able to sit through the gore but I didn’t feel it deserved that measure. Half of the jokes displayed in the film are during these moments so if you miss them the appeal and bloody luster of the film may not affect you the same way. Horror fans will really appreciate the loose themes found in COTD as it brings an air of organized chaos. There is really no rhyme or reason to the plight of the clowns, it’s just when they see something they want, they get it. Papa Corn has no issues with relaying some of your faults as his boys wreck shop on your mind body and soul. With painted faces, gags a plenty and blades everywhere CIRCUS OF THE DEAD has created its own genre inspiration called “hilarious torture”!

As entertaining as COTD is the true downfall is the latter half of the film that tends to drag a bit much. It’s establish early and often that these clowns have no shame and hold no remorse. So while we were still intrigued on how the story would finish developing it just did not hold the same moxy as earlier segments. Not too much to steer you away but enough to know that the point was made. CIRCUS OF THE DEAD is a film that I am curious to see how it is received by the general public. That includes horror fans. For those not into gore they may pass it up but doing so will make you miss one of the most memorable performances in horror. For us gorehounds we need more films like CIRCUS OF THE DEAD. The American indie horror filmmakers have found their niche and love in sleaze and gore. For this to be a true statement films like COTD must exist. Billy Pon has given us a hidden disgustingly little gem that the entire horror landscape should be thankful for. Without films like these horror would plunder into an age of mind numbing thinking mans films and sometimes we just want some good old fashion violence. We have that and more in CIRCUS OF THE DEAD.

Circus of the Dead director Billy Pon releases sneak peek scene snip for Indie Horror TV. Watch at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDvRLw5tDvQ. The make-up design for my character, by Pon & make-up artist Esau Ramirez, pleased me immensely with its subtle homage to Lon Chaney, Sr.'s silent clowns...
Once again, Soundcloud amplifies the distortion too much but this is a theme from Circus of The Dead. Beautiful Dreamer is an old song written by Stephen Foster. I arranged it with calliope, electronic percussion, vintage vocals and sound design. Beautiful Dreamer by ScorpionSoundDesign
