Posted @withregram • @oldwestdaily “Tombstone” debuted with a very troubled history. The original director was fired, replaced by George P. Cosmatos, who had conflicts with a number of cast and crew. Kurt Russell has stated that he essentially directed the movie in the end, and this assertion has been supported by Val Kilmer and others. Due to such an uneven production, Hollywood Pictures thought they had a real stinker on their hands. They prevented major film critics from screening it in advance to avoid bad reviews. And then a funny thing happened—after a sluggish start, revenue increased by 35% in its second week. Word of mouth was positive, enthusiastic. Critic Roger Ebert remembered, “People started telling me they really liked Val Kilmer’s performance, and I heard this everywhere I went.” President Bill Clinton chimed in on the movie and loving the Doc Holliday performance. Everyone was talking about the movie its studio was sure would bomb. It ended up ranking as the 20th biggest money maker of 1993, a year that included films like “Jurassic Park”, “Mrs. Doubtfire”, “Schindler’s List”, and “The Fugitive”. I love “Tombstone” as a movie, and I love it even more that it was an underdog that defied all expectations, carried along by audiences who were way savvier than the studio heads. #oldwestdaily #oldwest #wildwest #oldwesthistory #americanfrontier #sixgun #sixshooter #imyourhuckleberry #gunspinning #gunslinger #gunfighter #Billythekid #jessejames #docholliday #wyattearp #wildbill #tombstone #deadwood #oldwestcommunity #fastdraw #cowboy #pewpew #2a #slapleather #revolvers #cowboyactionshooting #outlaws #cowboyduel https://www.instagram.com/p/CJL4AJsrHLMpKbzHHnwzOnSvhgDd9NZhUtUPOg0/?igshid=2z9fbfw4028
