[0 days] Surgery Day! eeeeek - 20/June/2018
Today I had my surgery! It was difficult to sleep last night due to it being a new environment but after a little while I got to sleep. I spent most of the day waiting as I was told my surgery would be in the afternoon - i was #3 on the surgery list.
Now that I know the official name of my surgery I was able to find a more accurate video of my prodedure - Bimaxillary Osteotomy. They decided not to go ahead with the genioplasty as they feel I would not need it with the other procedures.
A girl arrived just after me yesterday for the same surgery and I could see her bed from mine - she went in for her surgery before me and was gone for about 4 hours and I was after her so I suppose the first surgery must have been quite early/short. The other girl returned back around 1pm and the same porters who brought her back took me to surgery around 1.40pm. My nurse for the day, Kirstie, kept me up to date as to when I should begin to get ready. However, I was taken to my surgery a bit earlier than expected so I had a little bit of a rush to get my gown on!
While waiting the whole morning I was visited by the anesthetist who asked me basic questions such as if I had have any issues with anesthesia before as well as informing me that I would have a breathing tube in one nostril (although I was surprised to find this added and removed all while I was asleep so I had no idea about it!)
The last thing I remember before surgery is signing a few different consent forms and being told I may feel cold going up my arm (meds in the cannula). I remember waiting for this feeling and then ... I woke up post-op!
Post-op was very bizarre. I remember briefly waking up but not being able to stay awake for more than a few seconds it felt, and I heard the nurse telling this to someone else and that I should stay in recovery a little longer. The next thing I knew I was back on the ward; this time in my own personal room next door to the girl who had the same surgery as me.
Shortly after my family came through to see me which was nice, despite it being a bit late for them (one hour journey each way, I got back to the ward around 6pm). It felt like they only briefly popped in but I know they were there for a while. I was disorientated from the surgery and drugs!
When I woke up I was surprised to see I had another cannula added further up my arm. When I asked, I was told one was for a drip and the other for medication. However, when I was disconnected from the drip for a toilet break the nurse put the meds through the same cannula (arm one) before putting the drip back on. My first toilet visit was difficult as I felt quite weak. When they attempted to disconnect the drip they forgot a cap which meant I kind of bled everywhere, too!
It was a pretty rough night that night. The nurses urged me to drink milkshake (which I did, it tasted delicious, and I was very surprised to be able to drink through a straw). I was feeling nauseaus all evening and then around 10.30 I vomited and was told this was mostly the blood I had swallowed during surgery. I managed to make a massive mess despite having a bowl so that was gown change #1. It was difficult to sleep due to being hooked up to a blood pressure machine which randomly did a check every so often, as well as a heart rate monitor on my toe, drip and cooling face mask (the weird plastic thing in the picture, which, felt awesome!).
I went to sleep until around 2.30am when I vomited again a lot more severe. The milk did not settle well apparently, so this resulted me in having to use my tongue to push the curdled milk through the elastics on my braces. It was... absolutely awful. There was a dedicated nurse for me and the other jaw surgery patient next door; they set up a mini desk outside our doors and kept an eye on us all night. She was so lovely and helped me through gown change #2 without any hassle!
She was nice enough to take all the monitors off me for an hour from 5am til 6am so I could get some rest which was probably the best hour of sleep I got.
