Happy Independence Day, Barbados! The first Europeans to land on Barbados arrived in the early 16th Century (either the Spanish or the Portuguese--thus, the name, Os or Los Barbados [the bearded ones]), but it was the English who claimed the island in 1625. In 1966, Barbados became an independent nation of the Commonwealth, but as such, the British monarch is still the Barbadian head of state.
