Si hubiera alguien siguiendo este blog, seguro que pensaría que hemos muerto con tanto tiempo sin escribir. Pues nada así, sólo el trabajo sin tregua. Pensé que iba a escribir algo para el año nuevo – el 31, el primero, pero…digamos que este es el blog del año nuevo, 6 días tarde.

El 2012 fue, en términos de La Casa Abya Yala, algo largo y frustrante por un lado, por el otro lado muy productivo. Eso depende de mi actitud en el momento. A pesar de lo que me parece un sinfín de demoras y obstáculos, llegamos a estar muy cerca al momento en el cual podemos empezar a construir el taller, tanto como nos podríamos prometer que en 2013 nos vamos a mudar (por lo menos, ya que es una promesa mutua, si no cumplimos será una falla mutua). Además, practiqué y aprendí bastante sobre la siembra en general y las plantas específicas que nos interesan para el terreno con el Huertiko en Caracas y el vivero. En los últimos días, mi forma de relajar por unos minutos ha sido recorrer sitios donde venden semillas y plantas para climas como el nuestro. No se me ocurre otra manera de decirlo – es porn de plantas. Puedo perder horas viendo las fotos y leyendo las descripciones, imaginando cómo sería estar entre esas flores y frutas con sus ricos olores y sabores…mmm…sí bebé…

¿Ves? Porn.

Bueno, qué nos espera en este blog en 2013? A ver. De la construcción del taller, los primeros pasos serán del techo – hablaremos de cómo vamos a curar el bambú, hacer los pedestales, etc. Luego las recamaras del baño seco, así que hablaremos de los detalles del baño por fin. Las trincheras de los cimientos, y las fundaciones de sacos de piedra o de escombros de concreto – hablaremos de los detalles de colocar los sacos, etc. Encima de esas fundaciones las paredes, que van a ser de la técnica tradicional que se llama bajareque, específicamente la versión guatemalteca – hablaremos de eso. (Un compañero de la construcción natural tiene un blog hermoso sobre sus proyectos de permacultura y bioconstrucción en Guatemala donde ha escrito sobre este tipo de bajareque.) Por supuesto serán asuntos de las instalaciones de luz y agua, de las ventanas, puertas y el piso. Coño me estoy asustando con todo lo que hay que hacer.

Además, seguiremos sembrando y cuidando las matas, incluso las nuevas de las semillas que compré durante mis momentos de indulgencia en porn de plantas, y hablando de las más interesantes y cómo las vamos a usar en nuestro proyecto. Haremos unos primeros intentos de injertos de algunos arbolitos frutales, empezando con aguacates, y de esos fracasos y los éxitos (ojalá) hablaremos acá.

Hay mil cosas más que ni siquiera se me ocurren ahora. Ojalá que escriba la mitad de lo que hacemos. Ojalá que hagamos la mitad de lo que hace falta. Por cierto, aún les debo una actualización sobre la comida de gatos. No se me ha olvidado, se lo juro. Cuando el tiempo permita…

El 2013 va a ser un año bien full - de trabajo, de aprendizaje, de fracasos y éxitos, y de cambios. Daniel y yo, y los gatikos bonitos, tenemos la suerte de estar juntos durante todo, así que pase lo que pase, va a ser un buen año.

If someone was following this blog, they'd probably think we'd died, not having posted for so long. No, nothing like that. Just constant work. I thought I'd write something for the new year, the 31st, the first... let's say this is the New Year's post, 6 days late.

2012 was, in terms of La Casa Abya Yala, long and frustrating on one hand and on the other hand very productive. Depends on my mood in the moment. Despite what seems to me endless delays and obstacles we did manage to come within striking distance of breaking ground on the workshop, so much so that we promised each other that in 2013 we will move (at least, it being a mutual promise, if we don't come through it will be a mutual failure). Also, I practiced and learned a lot about gardening in general and caring for specific plants that interest us for our land in the Lil Kitchen Garden in Caracas and the nursery. Lately, my way of relaxing for a few minutes has been perusing online stores that sell seeds and plants for our climate. Can't think of another way to say it - it's plant porn. I can lose hours looking at the pictures and reading the descriptions, imagining how it would be among those beautiful flowers and fruits with their lovely smells and flavors...mmm...yeah baby...

See? Porn.

Well, what do we expect in this blog in 2013? Let's see. As for the workshop construction, the first steps will be the roof - we'll talk about how we're going to cure the bamboo, make the support columns, etc. Then the dry toilet chambers, so we'll talk about the dry toilet concept finally. The trenches for the foundation, and the foundation/stem wall of gravel/rubble bags - we'll talk about laying the bags and all that. On top of that stem wall go the walls which we'll build using a traditional technique called bajareque, specifically the Guatemalan version - we'll talk about that. (A fellow natural builder has a beautiful blog about his permaculture and bio-construction projects in Guatemala where he's written about this type of bajareque.) Of course there will also be installing the electricity and plumbing, windows, doors, the floor. Yikes I'm freaking myself out thinking about everything there is to do.

Non-construction wise, we'll keep planting and tending the plants, including the new seeds I bought during my moments of indulgence in plant porn, and talking about the most interesting ones and how we plan to use them in our project. We're going to make our first attempts at fruit tree grafting, starting with avocados, and we'll discuss those failures and successes (hopefully) here.

There are a million more things that I can't think of now. Hopefully we'll write half of what we do. Hopefully we'll do half of what is necessary. Oh yeah, I still owe you an update about the cat food - I haven't forgotten I swear. When time permits...

2013 is going to be damn full - of work, lessons learned, of failures and successes, and of change. Daniel and I, and the kitties, have the good fortune of being together through it all, so whatever happens, it's going to be a good year.
