The communicable African Swine Fever (ASF) has adversely crippled the countryu2019s swine industry in the last few years and subsequently hampered the growth of the agriculture sector. Australia has some of the world’s strictest bio-security laws as a result of past incidents but the officers concerned seem to be a little enthusiastic in that in the last few months priceless scientific samples on loan from New Zealand and France have been destroyed, and lending to Australian Institutes stopped.
In the latest, a 170 year old, type specie sample, of a particular daisy was on loan from an institution in France to an Australian institute so that it could be shown and studied. Its monetary value was marked as A$1.5 but its scientific value is enormous.
Can you imagine how the Australian curator must have felt when he had to tell his French counterpart ‘G’day mate, je suis désolé ...’
